Join us as Exeter Food invites Minette Batters, President of the NFU, to discuss inevitable changes for the global food system

Minette Batters, President of the National Farmer&#x27;s Union (NFU), will deliver a public lecture on &#x27;The Crossroads of change for food, farming and the environment&#x27;. Change for the food system is now even more inevitable than ever. Food price inflation is gradually redefining consumers’ relationship with what they eat and is now a leading issue in the cost-of-living crisis. Inflation has made it difficult for markets to establish a supply and demand balance, a key indicator of market failure. Energy is a key component of the food system, and this integration is important for both commercial and climate reasons. Net Zero is a growing theme for the food system with businesses starting to get into the detail and managing green washing risks. Finally, all this ties into having a robust understanding of what food security is, how it’s measured and the implications for policy.Minette Batters runs a tenanted family farm in Wiltshire. The mixed farming business includes a 100-cow continental cross suckler herd, as well as sheep and arable. Minette co-founded the campaigning initiatives &#x27;Ladies in Beef&#x27; and the &#x27;Great British Beef Week&#x27;. Minette is also an ambassador of Farm Africa and was made a Deputy Lieutenant to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth in 2021.Minette has been an NFU member from grassroots through to County Chairman; she served as Wiltshire’s Council delegate and also as Regional Board Chairman for the South West. From 2014-2018 Minette was a member of NFU Governance Board and served as NFU deputy president, before being elected as president in February 2018. Campaigning on behalf of NFU members about the importance of British food and farming has been a key driver for Minette throughout her time at the NFU. In 2020 she led one of the most successful petitions ever, bringing together a coalition of chefs, including Jamie Oliver, farmers, environmentalists, consumer groups and animal welfare experts - resulting in over one million people signing the NFU food standards petition.
