There are still some things employees are reluctant to discuss with their employers and fertility is certainly one of those. From concerns about the impact it could have on career prospects to simply not wanting to talk openly about a private, sensitive subject, employees often keep challenges they’re experiencing with fertility to themselves. However this can create issues, particularly when we know that 1 in 6 people worldwide are affected by infertility (World Health Organisation), with infertility in the UK on the rise (Fertility Family).

From a negative impact on mental health and wellbeing to a reduction in physical health, the challenges fertility difficulties present are numerous and varied and can have a significant impact in the workplace. And we’re not only talking about increased rates of absence. More than half of employees undergoing fertility treatment have experienced decreased job satisfaction while undergoing fertility treatment and two-thirds have reported reduced engagement (Fertility Network UK). Add to this the legal challenges that can arise in connection with things like confidentiality and discrimination and the HR issues that can crop up in relation to policy and procedure like it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by this underdiscussed and often stigmatised topic.
