The Oxley-Meier Guitar Project

“…the array of changing sounds, moods and textures they create is gorgeous, fascinating and apparently endless. Don’t fall into the trap of assuming that this is something exclusively for guitar buffs, or even jazz buffs. If you love music of any kind you’ll probably fall for this.” Observer

“This album is a wonderful example of the high level of music that can be made by combining two great guitarists/composers/improvisers such as Pete and Nicolas. They have put together a feast of virtuosity, delivered wit depth, wit and joy” Ralph Towner

An extra special Jazz At The Elephant tonight as we welcome two virtuoso guitarists to N12. Pete and Nick have been recording and touring together for a many years now, with a set of their own compositions which cover a vast range.

When playing live, they aim to recreate their broad palette of sounds, bringing at least ten differing guitars with them (nylon 7-string, steel string, fretless, 11-string fretless, sitar-guitar, 12 string, etc.). Having clocked up hundreds of concerts together throughout the UK and Europe over the last five years, they perform with an almost uncanny empathy in their interplay. Expect the unexpected: lush and scintillating soundscapes ranging from Turkey to Brazil.

Pete Oxley: Pete began his musical career in Paris in the mid ‘80s before relocating to the UK in 1997. Shortly afterwards he opened The Spin jazz club in Oxford which in 2012 won the Parliamentary jazz award as ‘The Best Jazz Venue In The UK’. He regularly performs with some of the world’s leading jazz artists including Chris Garrick, Gilad Atzmon, Tim Whitehead, Dave O’Higgins, Bobby Wellins, John Etheridge and the new project Hejira, playing the music of Join Mitchell. He has now released 14 critically acclaimed CDs featuring his original compositions.

Nic Meier: UK-based guitarist Nicolas Meier has carved out a reputation as one of the UK’s most original and uniquely talented guitarists. Drawing from a love of Turkish, Eastern & Middle Eastern music, Flamenco, Tango and more — all mixed with jazz — Meier is one of the rising stars in a vibrant British jazz scene, but his versatility and musical fluency extends well beyond that ... so much so, that his considerable talents drew the attention of rock guitar legend, Jeff Beck, who made Nicolas a mainstay in The Jeff Beck Group, carrying him on two world tours over several years.

with Raph Mizraki: bass • Jeremy Shoham: sax • Rick Finlay: drums

Jazz at the Elephant home page

FAQs

Where will I be seated? The Elephant is a small local pub. We have very limited seating capacity, so we seat our audience in order of booking. So the sooner you book, the more likely you are to be able to choose your location (which you can do when you make your online booking). We offer the following options: near the band, middle of the room, rear, on stools at the bar to the side.

How does the food thing work? Easy… just turn up, your seats are reserved, our mouthwatering menus are on the tables. Order at the bar, staff will bring any food ordered to your table. Some like to munch during the gig, which is absolutely fine. Some like to get there early and eat before the music starts at 7. Given that a lot of people order at the same time food can take 20-30 mins from ordering time.

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event? There is on-street parking in the roads round the pub. West Finchley underground station (Northern Line) is a short walk away.

Can I pay on the night? Yes, for those who haven't pre-booked there is a collection at the interval. We charge £10 on the night but we can't guarantee that you'll get in or that there will be seating. So generally it's better to book – and when you do that you help us keep the club running.

Are there any concessions? If you join our mailing list you'll be sent a secret promo code which gives you discount for most gigs. There is a lower ticket price for students in full-time education.

Students and unwaged can also turn up on the night and pay whatever you like (or even nothing). We want you to be able to enjoy the music, and maybe you'll come back and pay the full admission in better times…

Accessibility Deaf and disabled people can apply for an extra ticket, free of charge, if they would be unable to attend a gig without the active support of another person. We encourage our audience to book online (we are too small to have a full-time box office) but if you have any difficulties booking on Eventbrite just call us on 020 8361 0265.

Where can I contact the organiser with any questions? Don’t hesitate to leave a message for Rick at Just East of Jazz on 020 8361 0265 for questions about the gig. For queries about the pub — food, drink, access and so on, call the pub on 020 8343 6110.
