Training delivered by designer and community engagement practitioner Hannah Clinch and software developer and Green Map maker Alex Casapu.

Green Maps are maps co-created by local people to chart a more sustainable future. Green Maps feature community resources such as: recycling points, local businesses, community gardens, green energy sites, biodiversity spots, bike routes and social enterprises. They can also highlight challenges such as: pollution, gentrification and habitat loss to draw attention to what needs to be addressed in a local community. The Green Map maker sessions:Over the course of 3 sessions, you will be introduced to Green Map making by Scottish based designer Hannah Clinch and Berlin based developer and GIS expert Alexandra Casapu. In each session we will focus on a different area of Green Map making from setting up a Green Map team, to working with Icons and adding data to your map using creative tools and techniques. Basic Green Map tools are free, Open Source and can be adapted for a range of purposes and projects by map makers. Through the training we aim to give you the skills to use these powerful tools in your practice. You can use the Green Map icons to start conversations with people about local environmental and community assets and challenges. The icons help people to categorize information about places visually and you can develop a map of any space from a small park or whole town.

Green Maps can take any format. Maps have been painted on walls, printed on fabric, paper and the Green Map Platform gives you the ability to transfer data generated through community consultation exercise onto a digital map that can be published and shared online.

You can work with young people or community groups to design and upload icons that describe their unique local characteristics. This process supports the development of creative and digital skills, whilst encouraging conversations about local community assets.

Each location added to a digital Green Map on the Platform can be enhanced by adding images, sound and text. So you can develop photography workshops, conduct interviews and create recordings and add these to your map.

If are working on an Active Travel project or thinking about a 20 minuet neighborhood you can use mobile phone GPX data to record and upload walking routes to you map.

Think global, map local The process of creating a Green Map is collaborative and creative. It supports people to share local knowledge and learn about sustainable development within their own context. Creating a Green Map involves getting out into the community to gather data using a range of methods including photography, route mapping and sound recording. So Green Map making is also an opportunity for participants to learn and use digital skills whilst expanding their knowledge of Open Source and community owned data.
