Join us for one of east Perthshire’s greatest tales - the story of Vanora - told at the top of Barry Hill Fort near Alyth

Did you know that east Perthshire hosts a dramatic, hidden story from the great King Arthur myth? Vanora is the Scottish name for Guinevere - Arthur’s queen - and Barry Hill near Alyth is one of the key sites in her gruesome story. We do not know when Vanora’s story was first told, but it would have been repeated and reshaped many times before Hector Boece first wrote down the legend in 1527. Join our storyteller Lindsey Gibb who will reveal all that happened to this fateful queen, decoding it for our times, in what is probably the first time her story has been told on location at Barry Hill.Grade of walk: Medium - Suitable for people with at least average fitness and some country walking experience. Approx. 1.5km with steep sections across open grazed hillside.Cost: FreeAssembly point: The cattle feeding compound at the foot of Barry Hill, accessed off the B954 (NGR: NO 2616,5014); car parking is available here. Public transport and pedestrian attendees should email thecateranecomuseum@gmail.com in advance to arrange car share from Alyth.The story of Vanora contains some content that people may find upsetting, including references to and descriptions of violence. It is not suitable for children under the age of 14. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. You may wish to bring snack rations and drinking water. Be prepared for Scotland’s varied weather with clothing for wet/cold and warm/dry conditions. Please wear sturdy footwear with ankle support suitable for mixed upland terrain. There are no public toilets on this route. This session is part of <a href="https://cateranecomuseum.co.uk" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The Cateran Ecomuseum’s</a> innovative Museum of Rapid Transition programme which aims to reconnect people to heritage and traditions that are hidden and/or at risk, showing their practical relevance for more regenerative ways of living, bringing people together and enhancing a sense of place, stewardship and community resilience.The walk is being delivered by the Cateran Ecomuseum with the support of the National Lottery Heritage Fund, thanks to National Lottery players, as well as the Paths for All Smarter Choices Smarter People programme and the Cairngorms National Park Authority.
