Established in 1974, Derbyshire Historic Buildings Trust (DHBT) has been responsible for the rescue of many historic buildings throughout Derbyshire.  Using their skills and knowledge, members of the Trust identify neglected and abandoned historic buildings and then work to bring them back into new sustainable use.The Trust is a non-profit registered charity that is committed to the heritage of Derbyshire, working with its own in-house professionals to provide help and advice to groups and individuals sharing a passion for historic buildings.

23rd July 2023: Walking tour of John Smedley. Repeat of 2022 visit due to popular demand!Start at 2pm from the John Smedley Factory Shop on Mill Lane, Lea Bridge DE4 5AG.Park in the Customer Car Park or on Mill Lane. A walking tour led by the company Archivist of the outside of the mill complex at Lea Mills, the oldest part of which, built in 1784 by Florence Nightingale’s ancestor, is the oldest operating textile mill in the world and an important part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.This rare opportunity will show the development of the site from the mid 18th century lead smelting activity and the original cotton mill building of 1784, to the most recent addition of gas-fired boiler. It will also include the award-winning restoration of the 18th century mill cottages and ongoing housing development. The visit will last approx. 1 ½ hours and will end in the shop, where the group will receive an additional 10% off the price of any garments purchased on the day of the visit.NB: Please check current information re: closure of Lea Road, Cromford and allow extra time for your journey. The road closure between Lea Bridge and Cromford is not expected to re-open until December. Please wear stout boots (preferably walking boots) and check the weather forecast – no wet weather plan other than waterproofs! As it is a walking tour, attendees must be able to walk at least 1 mile, up and down slopes. There are no refreshments/ toilet facilities on site. Nearest public convenience: Church Lane, Holloway - approx 3/4 mile away.
