Glenlair House

Glenlair House is famous for being the home of Professor James Clerk Maxwell, an eminent Scottish mathematician and physicist who is regarded as the father of modern physics. Born in Edinburgh in 1831, Maxwell moved with his family to Glenlair House shortly afterwards and stayed there until his death in 1879. His pivotal work on electromagnetic waves demonstrated that electric and magnetic fields moved through space as waves at the speed of light. In these fields he is regarded as an equal of Einstein and Newton, indeed Einstein is quoted as saying he stood on Maxwell’s shoulders!Join us for an afternoon at Glenlair House to hear all about its history and a chance to share findings from Can You Dig It’s ‘Building Biographies’ project. Over the past few months, volunteers have been delving into the history of some of Galloway’s big country houses, uncovering connections to the slave trade, tales from local history, their role in the war effort and how larger changes in our society echoed in their halls. And to really get into the spirit, there will also be tea and scones for you to enjoy!
