Brighouse Bay

Sea weeds are remarkable. They grow in every ocean on the planet from cold arctic waters through to tropical seas. There are thousands of species world-wide and British waters are particularly diverse with over 650 species recorded. Some of them are amongst the fastest growing plants in the world and they can withstand tremendous storm forces without losing their ‘hold fast’ to the seabed. They are excellent indicators of ocean health and some species can be used to monitor warming seas and ocean acidification.
They are commonly eaten in almost all countries they are found in and, generally speaking, they are a safe foraging food in the UK waters with no known poisonous species, some of them have a high nutritional value as well as being incredibly tasty.
Nic Coombey from the Solway Firth Partnership will take you on a tour of the seaweeds of Brighouse Bay and Nick Chisholm from the Galloway Glens will prepare some seaweed snacks, derived from the same location. Bring sensible shoes, a knife and fork and a sense of adventure!
