St Ann’s Allotments are the oldest and largest area of Victorian detached town gardens in the world, and are Grade 2* Listed by English Heritage. The site covers 75 acres, has 700 gardens, over 30 miles of hedgerow and 2000 fruit trees, many of which are heritage varieties.STAA deliver outreach programmes to allow all members of the community to benefit from the site, including children’s activities on the Community Orchard, and volunteering opportunities on Urban Nature, Nursery, and Heritage Display gardens.

Workshops

Our seasonal learning programme is designed to help people get into gardening for wellbeing, whether that be foraging the hedgerow, making a seasonal wreath, or learning how to compost.

<p>This workshop will teach you everything you need to know to build your own wooden pallet compost bin at home, demonstrating the carpentry techniques and design possibilities. Participants would learn basic carpentry skills and design principles as well as the characteristics of a good compost system. </p><p>Facilitated by Tim Allman, this workshop takes place in the beautiful Heritage Display Garden (Olivers's) garden at St Ann's Allotments.</p>

<h3>Workshop details</h3><p><strong>Capacity:</strong> The maximum group size will be 8 people.</p><p><strong>Tickets:</strong> The ticket price includes materials, and all tools will be provided.</p><p><strong>Facilities:</strong> A compost toilet is available on Oliver's  with hand sanitizer for hand washing.</p><p><strong>Clothing: </strong>Please dress for the weather, and wear comfortable foot wear. <h3>About Tim Allman</h3><p>Tim is a carpenter and green builder, and has built lots of structures on allotments and community gardens over the years, including compost toilets and strawbale buildings. He is enthusiastic about the value of composting. </p>

<h3>About the Heritage Display Garden</h3><p>This workshop will take place on our Heritage Display Garden. This unique plot showcases the use of allotments through three different periods in history.</p><p>The Heritage Display Garden is maintained by volunteers at STAA for educational purposes. It features a variety of mature fruit trees, many of them heritage varieties, and also includes a pond, a glasshouse, and a Victorian summer house.</p><p>St Ann’s Allotments are Grade 2* Listed by Historic England, and designated an Area of Importance for Nature Conservation. It is the oldest and largest area of Victorian detached town gardens in the UK, with over 700-years of history, 500 gardens, and 32 miles of hedgerow.</p>
