Rachel Carney launches her debut collection ‘Octopus Mind’

Join us at Urban Crofters in Cardiff for the launch of Rachel Carney’s debut collection <a href="https://www.serenbooks.com/book/octopus-mind/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Octopus Mind</a>. She will be supported by guest readers Philip Gross and clare e. potter. Octopus Mind plays with an array of rich and original metaphors to explore the intricacies of neurodiversity, perception and the human mind. These poems articulate the desire to understand and be understood by oneself and others in a complex world. They observe the nuances of creativity, art, relationships, and self-expression through the lens of neurodiversity, reflecting on the poet’s experience of being diagnosed with dyspraxia as an adult.Entry is free and all are welcome but please register to let us know you&#x27;ll be attending. Doors open 7pm for 7:30pm start. Copies of the book will be available on the night from Seren.About the authorsRachel Carney is a Cardiff based poet, book reviewer, creative writing facilitator and researcher. She grew up in Sheffield, and has spent time living and working in various parts of the UK, as far afield as Aberystwyth, Newcastle upon Tyne, Grasmere and Oxford. She worked in museum learning, research and community engagement for several years, and is now completing a PhD, examining how ekphrastic poetry can enrich our engagement with art in museums. In 2021 she won the Pre-Raphaelite Society Poetry Competition, came 2nd in the Bangor Poetry Competition and was highly commended in the Liverpool Poetry Prize. She’s also had two poems shortlisted for the Bridport Prize, and one poem nominated for the Forward Prize, as well as being placed in several other competitions. Philip Gross is the author of 27 books of poetry, most recently The Thirteenth Angel (2022) which was a Poetry Book Society Recommendation, and was shortlisted for the T.S. Eliot Prize 2022. He has published eleven previous collections with Bloodaxe, includingThe Water Table (2009) which won the T.S. Eliot Prize 2009.﻿Changes of Address: Poems 1980-1998 (2001), his selection from earlier books. He is a keen collaborator, e.g. with Lesley Saunders on A Part of the Main (Mulfran, 2018), with scientists on the young people&#x27;s collection Dark Sky Park (Otter-Barry, 2018) and with artist Valerie Coffin Price and Welsh-language poet Cyril Jones on Troeon/Turnings (Seren, 2021)clare e. potter is a poet and radio presenter who studied an MA in Afro-Caribbean literature in Mississippi and taught in New Orleans. As an arts practitioner she facilitates creative projects with community groups and is driven by the belief that poetry can be a force for personal and social change. Her awards include two Literature Wales writing bursaries and Arts Council Funding for a poetry/jazz collaboration to respond to the trauma of Hurricane Katrina. She’s translated for National Poet of Wales, been featured on Welsh and English radio and television, and was a Hay Festival Writer at Work.
