Rewriting Justice: facilitating playwriting in criminal justice settings

Learn how Clean Break uses playwriting to develop skills and confidence for women in criminal justice settings, and its commission process.

Rewriting Justice is a one-day training course for theatre-artists, early career playwrights and criminal justice professionals with a particular interest in how to facilitate playwriting workshops in criminal justice settings, women's centres and the community as well as examining the personal and social value of this work. The day will be facilitated by Clean Break’s Artistic Director, Anna Herrmann and Creative Associate Titilola Dawudu. Through drama and playwriting exercises, group work and discussion, participants will:<ul><li>Learn creative ideas and exercises for facilitating playwriting with women in criminal justice settings</li><li>Identify best practice when working creatively with adults in vulnerable circumstances</li><li>Hear insights about working in prisons as a playwright for Clean Break </li><li>Explore next steps for those interested in pursuing this field as a career </li></ul>**A limited number of bursary places are available to anyone who has direct personal (not professional) experience of the criminal justice system.To apply for these, please write explaining your interest in the training event to events@cleanbreak.org.uk, marking your email with BURSARY REQUEST in the subject heading by Thursday 24 August 2023.If you have any access requirements you would like us to be aware of, please contact events@cleanbreak.org.uk and let us know.This training is open to participants who are women (this includes cis, intersex, and trans women)About the Facilitators Anna Herrmann is Artistic Director of Clean Break. She has been working in the field of theatre and social change for over thirty years, specialising in theatre and participation in the UK and abroad. She joined Clean Break as Head of Education in 2002, becoming Joint Artistic Director/Joint CEO in 2018. With Clean Break she has directed Through This Mist (co-directed with Róisín McBrinn), Sweatbox (national tour and film), Not Pretty Like The Rainbow (national tour) and Catch (national tour). In July 2020 Anna was elected as Co-chair of the National Criminal Justice Arts Alliance, stepping down in July 2022. Titilola Dawudu is a writer and artist whose work spans across arts and cultural, charity and youth sectors, and enables Black people, specifically Black women, and people from the global majority to thrive and show up as themselves. Titilola co-created and edited two volumes of Hear Me Now: Audition Monologues for Actors of Colour with Tamasha, published by Methuen Drama/Bloomsbury, and is a Creative Associate at Clean Break. <aside>Photography by Tracey Anderson</aside>
