A Numbi Arts Community Conversation- 8 th July 2023 from 6pm-9pm@ Granby Community Hub, 37 St Matthews Row, E2 6DTUsing the Rep The Road framework to guide a creative community conversation we will ask:● How do we Represent ourselves?● What are the issues that need Repairing within our community/ wider family?● How can we look back and move forward to Repair the roads that connect us, between generations,and across continents?Context:Black Lives Matter protesters pulled down a statue of enslaver Robert Billington from outside the Museum of London Docklands on June 9, 2020. The Mayor’s Assembly for Diversity in the Public Realm wants to replace it by 2026, with another new memorial monument costing circa. £500,000. Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, made the statement, “The impact of the slave trade has been felt by generations of Black communities in London, across Britain and around the world. Despite this, we do not have a dedicated memorial in our capital to honour the millions of enslaved people who suffered and died as a result of this barbaric practice.”Is such an action beneficial to the needs of the descendants of the Trans-Atlantic traffic in Enslaved Afrikans?Wouldn’t it be more honourable to recognise the lack of systemic social provisions for acknowledging culture and heritage of the victims of the Maangamizi (the ongoing holocaust of Afrikan enslavement), and offer cultural heritage arts provisions for their children?The GLA has given some guidance on the kind of response they are expecting from the public conversations…● Who should pay for this memorial? Given how much the British financial institutions benefitted and continued to benefit from the trade of enslaved Afrikans, would their financial contribution to this memorial be welcomed.● Should London’s Black Communities pay for the memorial to ensure that the money is ‘ethical’?● What are the dominant themes or complexities of the memorial and what is it trying to achieve – what are we trying to express (feelings and emotions)?● What characteristics or process should inform the creation of the shortlisted artists?● Should satellite sites be connected to the artistic development that links to the primary sites?● What needs to happen around the memorial to deliver it?This conversation will be a starter for a Windrush 75 -Generations who willingly migrated to the UK, upon an invitation, but who were met with hostility – 75 years later the colonial legacy of ‘a better life in England’ has still not yet been realised.* #RepTheRoad is an arts education platform to engage communities in responding to issues of reparatory justice. Numbi first held a workshop using the Rep The Road framework during our Repair and Rebellion residential at Sandele Eco Lodge in the Gambia, 2018.
