Join us for a tour to discover the  fascinating history of Sunderland Minster and enjoy a delicious afternoon tea in the church.

Sunderland Minster

Sunderland Minster is at the heart Bishopwearmouth. There has been a church on the site since at least 1214 when it stood at the centre of what was then a small village. The church, which was known at that time as St Michael and All Angels, was substantially re-modelled in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as Bishopwearmouth became part of Sunderland and the area changed and developed around it. St Michael&#x27;s became Sunderland Minster in 1998 when city status was granted. The tour will give a fascinating insight into the history of the church and the people and communities connected with it.The tour will last around an hour, after which you can enjoy sandwiches, scones and cakes along with tea or coffee whilst taking in the atmosphere of the church. This is a free event - there is no charge for the tour or the tea.This event is offered as part of <a href="https://www.heritageopendays.org.uk/visiting" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Heritage Open Days</a> and delivered through Bishopwearmouth Townscape Heritage Scheme, funded by National Lottery Heritage Fund.
