The Stirling Photography Festival is an inclusive celebration of community. Our mission is to develop skills, create opportunities, and build community through events, workshops, and exhibitions. Partnering with some of photography’s newest and finest talent from across the World, our aim is to connect our community through photography. Since we were established in 2018, we are delighted to have had the support of local businesses and Stirling’s creative and cultural organisations. Partnerships with Scotland's leading centres for photography, including Street Level Photoworks and Stills, strengthen our professional network and assist us in bringing leading artists to Stirling.

Reflect 2023- Stirling Photography Festival

This is the 6th year of the Stirling Photography Festival and we are delighted to be working with leading artists and organisations to deliver an exciting programme of talks, workshops and exhibitions.

Michael Carroll is a freelance Photographer, founder and current President of the <a href="https://rcr.org/support-for-ukraine" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Romanian Children's Relief Foundation (RCR)</a>, an American charity operating in Romania as <a href="https://inocenti.ro/home-english" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Fundația Inocenți, </a> the Foundation of the Innocents.In January 1990, he was one of the first photographers to travel to Romania after the fall of the communist regime. Mike was in Romania to investigate a reported pediatric AIDS epidemic. The subsequent stories, written and photographed for the Boston Globe, led directly to the formation of the Romanian Children's Relief Organization (RCR) - a charity dedicated to improving the quality of life and health care for children in Romanian institutions. Mike's responsibility has been to bring together the health care community and the business community, both Romanian and American, to collaborate in the development and perpetuation of these child development programs.In addition to serving an at-risk population of over 3,000 children and families in Cluj, Bucharest and Bistrita, the foundation is now providing crisis and trauma support for more than 800 Ukrainian refugees in multiple locations in Romania. In this talk, Mike will share the work currently being done supporting and settling Ukranian women and children through the charity in Romania.Photography as a Healing Mechanism: This talk is centred around 2 short films illustrating the power of the photographic image as a mechanism for social healing in a troubled environment. The films will be introduced by Mike and there will be the opportunity to explore with him the the work of his charity in the resettlement of Ukrainian refugees in Romania.The film “Tetiana” tells the story of a young mother and her children’s harrowing escape from war and the role of our Romanian Children’s Relief professionals in addressing the crisis and trauma suffered by Tetiana and her fellow refugees.The second film “Photovoice 2022” focuses on a group of Romanian and Ukrainian teenagers and the ability of the photographic image to bring together these two completely different cultures as they are confronting their lives together in a time of war. After a summer of mutual exploration, the children are united in an exhibition of their work in an iconic venue in the city of Bucharest.On the evening of 25th August, there will be a fundraising screening of Hand Held, a documentary made by film producer <a href="https://www.donhahn.com" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Don Hahn</a>, about Mike's work in Romania.
