About the weekend eventsVisiting St Davids is always an amazing experience, but this year is extra-ordinary. We are celebrating 900 years since Pope Callixtus II declared that two pilgrimages to St Davids should be regarded as of equal value to one to Rome. This special weekend celebrates the thousands of pilgrims who have come to these shores, making a pilgrimage to holy sites associated with St David. Pilgrimage continues to grow in popularity among people of all faiths and none, recognising the mental health and well-being benefits as well as the physical ones, of walking in nature, especially when done intentionally with some spiritual quest in mind.Day 2 Sunday 23rd July, Circular Pilgrimage, 10am – 4pmJoin us to walk this ancient landscape known as Mynyw, finishing at St Davids Cathedral. The 8-mile walk will be fully guided so that you don’t have to worry about finding your way. The route is available for those who wish to walk alone. https://www.plotaroute.com/route/2300009?units=km You are welcome to join the walk at various points if you prefer to limit the number of miles or inclines. You can bring a group or meet people on the way. The pilgrimage team will have stories to tell at various points along the way and features to point out. We will walk in the footsteps of saints Patrick, Aidan, Justinian, Non and David as well as the thousands of pilgrims who have walked this way before us. We will meet at Tŷ’r Pererin, the Education &amp; Pilgrimage Centre, Quickwell Hill, St Davids SA62 6PD, at 10am. You can also register at Porthclais or St Non’s. We will journey down towards the River Alun and make our way out of the city through the site of the mediaeval White Gate towards the sea. We then travel in sight of Carn Llidi where St Patrick was given a vision of the island of Ireland, before entering the old pilgrimage port of Porth Mawr.Joining the coast path at Whitesands Bay, where it will be high tide, we have expansive views looking towards St Davids Head and the ancient burial site. As we head south, we will have opportunity to pause at St John’s Point. At St Justinian&#x27;s Chapel we head inland towards Tyddewi.The route here leads us past moorland where pilgrims walking the Wexford-Pembrokeshire-Pilgrim-Way traditionally walk in silence. We head down towards the River Alun and into the harbour of Porthclais where many pilgrims arrived from the sea. Here there will be a break to eat lunch (bring picnic lunch or buy something at the kiosk). If you want a shorter pilgrimage of 3 miles this is where you can join us around 1pm. We rejoin the coastpath and head towards St Non’s Bay and the holy sites of St Non’s Chapel and Well. From healing waters to pilgrim artifacts, stories abound here, the final stop before reaching the cathedral. Part way along this road there will be opportunity to walk in silence to allow for reflection. If you want a short pilgrimage of 1 mile this is where you can join us around 2.30pm. Our pilgrimage ending is near the Bishop’s Palace where there’s opportunity to walk barefooted through the River Alun, as pilgrims in the past, as a symbolic new start. Those who wish, may then enter the cathedral where the special pilgrimage evensong begins at 4pm. It is here that we will have opportunity to reflect on the whole journey through word and song. Also to view that afternoon – the arrival of the Classic Car Pilgrimage on a cathedrals tour across the border to Wales. Look out for them around the Cathedral Close. This will end our celebratory Pilgrimage weekend, but we are still only part way through the Year of Pilgrimage so do join us for other pilgrimage related events until the end of the year. https://www.stdavidscathedral.org.uk/ What to bringAppropriate clothes and footwear; Waterproofs; Sun protection; Picnic Lunch, Water bottle or thermos flask. Anything required for wild loo stops. (Toilets available at Tŷ’r Pererin, Whitesands, Porthclais &amp; Cathedral.) A staff or walking stick are not essential but are a recognised symbol of the pilgrim.FAQ’sTravel arrangements - nearest train station is Fishguard &amp; Goodwick or Haverfordwest, both are a 30 minute bus ride to the welcome and registration point of Tŷ’r Pererin. Although pilgrims travelling from further afield may want to allow for overnight night accommodation. Those who wish to join us at Porthclais can use the Celtic Coaster Bus from the City Hall 12.30pm which will arrive at Porthclais at 12.40pm. For those who would like to join at St Non’s the Celtic Coaster leaves the City hall at 2pm and is a request stop. This route is a circular 8 miles starting and finishing in St Davids. Who can come? Anyone over 18 (or under 18 with parental guidance, bearing in mind the walking distance).Is this religious? All and no-faiths are equally welcome. We will use resources and sources from Christian heritage. We ask that all participating pilgrims tolerate one another, whatever their beliefs.Are there fitness limitations? Pilgrimage is moderately intense. If you struggle to walk all day, this type of pilgrimage may be an unsuitable activity for you right now. There are plenty of escape points en route as well as two joining points at Porthclais Harbour (1pm) and St Non’s Bay (3pm). But we will walk slowly, and start early, and 8 miles is a very manageable distance for the majority of people in this time. Unfortunately, this pilgrimage is not suited for mobility-impaired people or those requiring wheelchair access unless you want to join us at St Non’s where pathways and roads enable wheelchair or mobility scooter access.Can I bring my dog? This may be possible if your dog is kept on a lead or if you have a registered assistance dog.What does my ticket price pay for, in addition to admission?The funds raised will go towards the continued work of pilgrimage at St Davids Cathedral to enable us to welcome, host and encourage pilgrimage throughout this beautiful part of the world, that all may experience the benefits of being amongst and connected with all of creation.
