South Asian Heritage Month CWGC Tour - Brookwood Military Cemetery

Across Britain there are war graves and memorials at over 12,000 locations. From towering and dramatic memorials which bear the names of tens of thousands of missing personnel, to small and intimate local churchyards where perhaps only one service person is commemorated, there is so much to discover.

As part of South Asian Heritage Month, come and learn about the history of the Indian soldiers who are commemorated at this site.

CWGC Brookwood Military Cemetery

Join us for a tour of Brookwood Military Cemetery, the largest Commonwealth War Graves Commission site in the United Kingdom. The Muslim burial plot was created in the late1960s when the burials from the Muslim Cemetery in Woking were transferred to Brookwood Military Cemetery so they could be better maintained. There are 19 Muslim servicemen buried here from the First World War and a further 5 burials were made following the Second World War. Among those buried here is Naik (Corporal) Fazal Khan of the 93rd Burma Infantry who came from the Punjab. He has been wounded fighting in France in the autumn of 1915 and died of his wounds at a UK hospital. Please come dressed for the weather and in a suitable walking shoe. MEETING POINT: Entrance to Canada BuildingIf coming by vehicle you will be directed to parking when you arrive. There is a direct train service from Waterloo to Brookwood Station from which there is an entrance to the cemetery. The postcode is GU24 0JB. Brookwood Military Cemetery is not to be confused with Brookwood Cemetery. Google Maps provides the most accurate directions to the site. Brookwood Military Cemetery is accessed off Dawney Hill.
