The Stone of Scone: future destinies

A workshop exploring the history and heritage invested in the Stone of Scone/Stone of Destiny and its replicas.

You are warmly invited to join a free workshop about the Stone of Destiny. In attending, you will contribute to research seeking to understand the contemporary meanings and value of the Stone, and how it and its copies may be used to tell stories in the future. We are honoured to be joined by Jamie Hamilton, who will be bringing along a very special family memento of his father Ian Hamilton’s role in bringing the Stone back to Scotland in 1950/51. Perth Museum and Art Gallery is kindly bringing its recently acquired life-size replica of the Stone, accurately reproduced from a 3D scan. You will also be able to see Stone-related records among material displayed in the Scottish Political Archive throughout the day. A buffet lunch, tea and coffee are provided. The event coincides with Doors Open Days 2023 activities in Stirling University’s Pathfoot Building, the main venue for the University’s Art Collection. The artist George Wyllie’s Stone of Destiny is currently on exhibition, kindly lent by the Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum.This six-hour research workshop seeks the friendly and open engagement of people from diverse political parties and interest groups local to the Stirling area. Any questions?10:45-11:30	Opening discussion 11:30-12:30	Meet Jamie Hamilton, his family memento and stories12:30-13:15	Buffet lunch13:15-14:30	‘Do [not] touch’ – a tactile and creative activity working with and inspired by replicas and models of the Stone14:30:14:45	Tea14:45-15:45	Wrap-up discussionThe event is organised by Sally Foster of Stirling University and Elisabeth Niklasson of Aberdeen University with the support of the University of Stirling Scottish Political Archive and Art Collection. At Stirling, it is part of a University of Stirling research project entitled Authenticity’s Child: current meanings and future destinies for the Stone of Scone, funded by the British Academy / Leverhulme Trust (https://TheStone.stir.ac.uk). The immediate context for this research is that the Stone is on the move a lot in a short period and this has therefore renewed social and political interest in it: Edinburgh Castle &gt; Westminster Abbey &gt; Edinburgh Castle &gt; St Giles &gt; Edinburgh Castle &gt; in 2024, the new Perth Museum.The <a href="https://thestone.stir.ac.uk/the-stone-of-scone-future-destinies/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Project Information Sheet</a> describes the event and its ethical process, which has been approved by the University of Stirling; after signing up for the event, you will be asked in an email two weeks prior to attending, to give your informed consent to participation. You can get in touch if you would like to read this form sooner.The research process will involve audio recording / taking notes of discussions and participant observation (any future use of quotes from attendees will be anonymous). We would also like to take photographs of the event for use in our lectures, social media and publications (you would need to let us know if you did not want to be in a photograph).You must be over 16 years of age. Please book a ticket for each person attending.
