Wintering Well: Living with Seasonal Affective Disorder

Feeling down, cooped up and tired during the winter may be an experience familiar to many of us who live at northerly latitudes, but some find the season especially difficult, even incapacitating. Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is an intensified form of this lived experience that, for considerable numbers of people in the UK, can be debilitating and limiting, resulting in lowered mood, social isolation, and feelings of anxiety.Over the past year, the Living with SAD research project has studied the lived experiences of people living in and near Glasgow who are affected by SAD through interviews, seasonal diaries and a national survey. From October 2022 to May 2023, we additionally organised a series of creative-led Wintering Well workshops for people facing the challenges of living with SAD: together with the workshop participants, we explored strategies and creative approaches for inhabiting the winter months and sesasonal changes differently. We thought up ways to look for winter light even when the skies are dark and gloomy. At this public and participatory event, we will share the findings and key outcomes from the Living with SAD project. We will also host a range of guest speakers who will provide additional perspectives from arts and medical practitioenrs on the challenges and possibilities of the winter months. Finally, we will invite all participants to join in a creative sky framing exercise and contribute to further conversations about what it's like to live in Glasgow during the winter, and how we might build better winter lives together with other members of our community.
