Join us as we celebrate the launch of our latest exhibition, Fetissoes: a major new commission by Glasgow-based artist Kialy Tihngang.About the exhibitionFetissoes is a new body of work by Kialy Tihngang, commissioned by ‘a space’ arts in partnership with Black History Month South and exhibited at ‘a space’ arts’ headline venue, God’s House Tower, a 700-year-old ancient monument in the heart of Southampton's Old Town.For this commission, Kialy speculates that a group of enslaved African people jumped overboard their captors ship into the ocean and combined European maritime technology (the master’s tools) with fetishes (African religious objects with magical powers) to create tools to safely return home underwater. These tools take the form of six wearable sculptures, displayed in the Main Gallery space. An accompanying video showing the artefacts in action will be exhibited in the Barker Mill Project Space.About the event C﻿elebrate the launch of the exhibition and find out about Kialy Tihngang's influences and the process behind Fetissoes.T﻿he bar will be open throughout the evening serving drinks and light refreshments.S﻿aturday 7th October 6pm-8pm at God's House Tower.About the artistKialy Tihngang is a multidisciplinary artist based in Glasgow. As a British-born Cameroonian, Kialy’’s research-based practice focuses on colonial European misrepresentation, extraction, and demonisation of West African cultural practices, but also on her own misremembering, misreading, and romanticisation of said practices. Primarily, she designs artefacts from reimagined histories and speculated futures.Access and Quiet Spaces: The artwork for this exhibition can be found in the Main Gallery and Project Space which are both served by a lift and will be open all evening.  The ground floor bar and cafe to GHT have step free access from Town Quay Road. There will be chairs in the cafe. If you need any assistance finding a seat please ask a member of the GHT team who will be happy to help.Throughout the event the Cafe Extension will be used as a quiet space with dimmed lighting, seating, quiet music and water available. Please use this space if you need to for any reason to take a break.If you’d like to familiarise yourself before your visit you can take a virtual tour of the spaces on our website. You’ll also find a visual story so that you know what to expect and how to identify members of the GHT Team. This event is totally free to attend and we’ll be operating a ‘pay what you feel’ system at the end of the night. If you have a good night and can spare a few pounds we’d really appreciate it. All donation are welcome. You can also support by buying drinks and snacks at the bar! All funds raised will help us to keep these projects free to take part in and to attend and will help to build a creative community around GHT.
