Botanical Illustration Workshop for Families with Dominica Williamson

Hayle Town Council serves the town of Hayle and surrounding area. Hayle is a port town in West Cornwall with a rich mining and manufacturing heritage.  The town was awarded World Heritage status in 2006.Hayle Town Council aims to maintain open and wide-ranging dialogue with the community it serves.  It is committed to a sustainable approach that will steer the strategy for Hayle town and surrounding area.

Outdoor workshop for children aged between 8 and 16 and accompanying adults. Led by FOTT Art Club founder member Dominica Williamson.

St Gothian Sands

Join artist Dominica Williamson for a fun and free art workshop, for families with children aged 8 to 16, at St Gothian Sands Nature Reserve on the footpath at the seaward side of the pool. Look out for our blue FOTT sail flag. This is part of Hayle Health and Wellbeing Festival and is run by Friends Of The Towans Art Club and supported by Dynamic Dunescapes and Cornwall Wildlife Trust.

Participants will learn about unique and sometimes rare plants that are special to the sand dune system. By first using hand lenses and making time to really 'see', then by drawing and painting, the wonders of the tiny world of plants will be explored! These workshops target science and art in a fun and relaxed way, with the aim of enabling everyone to become inspired by the dunes as well as the art of painting plants. No experience is required, just the thirst for listening, looking, drawing and painting.

We will be working on the ground and exploring the plants in the dunes so you will need to wear clothes suitable for this and for painting outdoors. 

Check the weather forecast and bring a hat, sunscreen, a waterproof coat, etc. and a cushion. Please think about wearing layers, fingerless gloves as it may be chilly. We also recommend bringing a hot drink and water. 

All art and scientific materials will be supplied and you can borrow water soluble coloured pencils, water pens, pencils, rubbers and sharpeners. Artist Hilary Jean Gibson will be assisting.

We will meet at St Gothian Sands. What three words: ///spare.footpath.shrub. Look out for the Friends of the Towans sailflag. 

Car parking is available in lay-bys on either side of the B3301 near the entrance to the reserve or park at Godrevy NT Café Car Park (remember NT membership card if you’re a member). From there you can access the beach by leaving the car park on the left hand side facing the beach and follow the path across the bridge to the ridge at the top of the beach, it’s not far to walk from the car park. 

This workshop consists of a day of activities being run by Friends Of The Towans (FOTT) and Friends Of The Towans Art Club.
