After the successful launch of the Historical Writers&#x27; Association (HWA) Historia Live programme in London earlier this year, we are thrilled to announce Historia Live – Dublin, a series of author events in Ireland, in association with Dublin UNESCO City of Literature. Our first Dublin event, Wicked Ireland, will be held at Pearse Street Library on Wednesday 18th October from 6.30-8pm. In this entertaining and seasonally atmospheric discussion, New York Times best-selling author, Hazel Gaynor will host a conversation with three bestselling Irish authors, Siobhan MacGowan, Andrew Hughes and Niamh Boyce, whose most recent novels are set around aspects of Ireland&#x27;s dark and mysterious past.Suitable for readers and writers of historical fiction, the conversation will focus on the authors’ historical inspiration, the challenges of historical research, insights into their creative writing routines and processes, and why historical fiction is increasingly popular. Following the discussion, there will be an open Q&amp;A session, and attendees will have the opportunity to meet the authors during a book signing, with books available to purchase on the night. Refreshments will also be provided.

Siobhan MacGowan is the author of two historical novels, The Trial of Lotta Rae, revolving around an Old Bailey trial in early 20th century London and The Graces, set in the same period but a story of Dublin, mysticism and malice aforethought. Born to Irish parents in England, Siobhan settled in Ireland 35 years ago and worked both in England and Ireland as a journalist, a copywriter (for her sins) and in the music business, travelling the USA and Europe for two years as Van Morrison’s personal assistant. However, writing always her first love, The Trial of Lotta Rae was published in 2022 to widespread acclaim becoming a Times Historical fiction pick. The Graces was published this summer, described by The Sunday Independent as ‘the Dublin of 1911 captured beautifully by a born storyteller.’ The Graces has been chosen as the October read for the newly launched An Post national book club.

Born in County Wexford, Andrew Hughes is an author, archivist and historian. His debut novel, The Convictions of John Delahunt, was shortlisted for Crime Book of the Year at the Irish Book Awards. His second novel, The Coroner’s Daughter, was the One Dublin One Book choice for 2023. His first contemporary crime novel, Emma, Disappeared, will be published by Hachette Ireland in April of next year.

Niamh Boyce won The Hennessy New Irish Writer of the Year in 2012 for her poetry, subsequently collected in Inside The Wolf. Her debut novel The Herbalist was an Irish Writer’s Centre Novel Fair Winner. An instant bestseller, it also won Debut of the Year at the Irish Book Awards and was nominated for an IMPAC. Her Kind, her second novel, is based on the witchcraft trial of Alice Kyteler. Nominated for the EU Prize for literature, the judges called it ‘as searing a critique of our own times as is Arthur Millar’s The Crucible.’ Niamh was recently awarded the 2022 Dennis O Driscoll Literary Award by Kildare County Council.

Hazel Gaynor is an award-winning New York Times, USA Today, and Irish Times bestselling author known for her deeply moving historical novels which explore the defining events of the 20th century. Her debut, The Girl Who Came Home, won the 2015 RNA Historical Novel award, The Lighthouse Keeper’s Daughter was shortlisted for the 2019 HWA Gold Crown award, and The Girl from The Savoy and The Bird in the Bamboo Cage were both shortlisted for the Irish Book Awards. Her latest novel, The Last Lifeboat, was an Irish Times bestseller and was chosen by The Times as a historical novel of the month. Hazel’s work is translated into 20 languages to date. She lives in County Kildare with her family.
