They transmit data to allow instantaneous, ubiquitous communication and data access. They allow light to be used for cutting and welding, for sensing and imaging, for displays and illumination, and data storage. They can even be used to entertain your cat. Different classes of laser diode will be discussed with a view to their operation, and applications. I will go on to discuss my future research plans to make laser diodes do some of the things that they currently don’t do.BiographyProfessor Hogg’s research spans developing epitaxial processes, device designs and processing, through to devices for system applications. This includes quantum dot devices, quantum cascade lasers, resonant tunnelling diode THz emitters, super-luminescent diodes, and photonic crystal surface emitting lasers.Professor Hogg has 28 years post-doctoral experience in compound semiconductor technologies, spanning research, development, and manufacturing. This includes;· Three years experience in a key foundry management role (Manager of Materials Characterisation) at Agilent Technologies, Ipswich, which was the highest volume III-V facility in Europe, at the time (2000-2003).· Five years experience in corporate R&D laboratories (NTT, Toshiba) developing advanced device concepts and technologies.· Twenty years in University R&D (Universities of Sheffield, Glasgow, and now Aston) where he has built a research group developing novel light sources; their manufacture (epitaxial growth, device fabrication), device physics and engineering, and applications.His research resulted in two new ventures in 2020 – Vector Photonics Ltd (commercialising photonic crystal surface emitting lasers), and III-V Epi Ltd (a small-medium supplier of epitaxial wafers and services).
