Come and join me on a 5 week journey, learning  the basics of how to use clay, mix glaze and apply decoration/glaze to your work.

Hello,My name is Helen McCormick and I'm a local artist and teacher. I've been creating objects from clay for over 26 years, and I still absolutely love the process. I am passionate about teaching and have created this course to share my skills, knowledge and experience with anyone who would like to have a go for the first time or to develop their skills further.My course is designed for complete beginners or for those who have used clay before but feel that they want to improve their knowledge and understanding of pottery/ceramics. During each session you will learn traditional hand-building techniques to create a series of objects, which will deepen your knowledge and understanding of how to manipulate the clay into successful outcomes, as well as glaze making and application. The course is split into 5 weekly 3 hour sessions every Tuesday starting on Tuesday 5th September. The course will cover the following: Session 1: You will learn about different types of clay and how to create a beautiful pot/bowl using a pinch pot and coiling technique. By the end of this session, you will have 3 pots/bowls from 3 different clays, which you will glaze in the last session. Session 2: You will learn slab building techniques and the different stages of how clay dries. Using this technique you will create a beautiful box/house/object of your choice and a selection of test tiles (which will be used for your glaze later).Session 3: You will create a cup/mug/jug using a hand-building technique of your choice, and then learn how to pull handles out of clay and attach them to your object. Finally you will add decoration and pattern to the clay using decorating slips and sgraffito/carving techniques.Session 4: During this session you will learn the basics about what glaze is and how to make your own glaze. You will test your own glaze on your own test tiles to see the results. There will also be other glazes available to try out. Session 5: The final session will be on how to apply your glaze to your work. All the pieces you will have made during the course will be glazed in this session. T﻿he dates for each session are: Tuesday 9th January 18:30 - 21:30Tuesday 16th January 18:30 - 21:30Tuesday 23rd January18:30 - 21:30Tuesday 30th January 18:30 - 21:30Tuesday 6th February 18:30 - 21:30All tools, materials and information resources will be provided. There will be opportunities to buy your own equipment and clay. Tea and Coffee will be available throughout each session. The only thing you need to bring is an apron or wear old clothes if possible and a notepad and pen if you wish to take notes or have any questions you wish to ask me. There is FREE parking at the Walronds. The carpark is located at the back of the building. To access the carpark you will need to turn up Tiverton Road off the High Street, and then turn left just before the fire station onto Shortlands Lane. It is a narrow lane and easily missed. Drive a few yards up the lane and you will see the sign for the carpark on the left. Turn left and follow the drive through the gate ahead. Your work will be ready to collect approximately 6 weeks after the course has finished from The Walronds.
