In this session, Andrea will focus on biological mechanisms that can be relevant to better understand pain and its complex mechanisms

E﻿vent DescriptionThe more we study pain, particularly persistent pain, the more we understand how complex it is, and how many factors might be contributing to its experience. Some people seem to be more vulnerable and predisposed to experience persistent pain and preliminary research shows that predisposition to develop persistent pain can be linked to a combination of genetic mutations and epigenetic changes. Both genetic and epigenetic mechanisms can in fact influence the expression of genes, proteins, hormones, neurotransmitters, and other molecules, thus influencing how different biological systems (e.g. the immune system, or the nervous system) work. But epigenetic mechanisms are not genetic mutations, they are modifiable factors, responsive to our environment and lifestyle. The excitement around epigenetics is likely linked to the intriguing possibility that changing our lifestyle and behaviour might actually foster changes in our biology. Join at www.lepubscientifique.com Dr Andrea PolliAndrea Polli is a physiotherapist and postdoctoral researcher at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. He obtained his bachelor in physiotherapy and master’s degree in rehabilitation of musculoskeletal disorders in Italy, where he also worked as a clinician for a few years. He then moved to the UK, to obtain the MSc in Pain: Science &amp; Society at the prestigious King’s College London. He moved to Belgium, where he obtained his joint PhD at the universities VU Brussel and KU Leuven in 2020, exploring the link between epigenetic mechanisms and exercise in people with persistent pain and ME/CFS. Andrea the received a post-doctoral fellowship in 2021 and was awarded with a prestigious EFIC-EGG grant from the European federation for the Study of Pain in 2022. These grants allow Andrea to continue working at the VU Brussel and KU Leuven and he is now responsible of the research line on the biology and epigenetics of pain. He is author or co-author in 35 publications in peer-reviewed international scientific journals and is extensively involved in teaching in many forms.
