Music in the University‘Music in the University’ is the umbrella term for all public facing music events that the University offers. It is a core public engagement offering for University of Glasgow: a key part of our civic engagement and important longstanding social and wellbeing initiative for our internal and external university communities.We provide free and affordable access to world class music from concerts and gigs, to learning and participation events, to research. All events are open for anyone to attend, regardless of any relationship with the University. The programme works closely with the internationally renowned professional Scottish music sector and has partner organisations both in the UK and beyond. We collaborate across all University of Glasgow departments, research initiatives, public facing conferences and events, development and alumni initiatives.

<h1>Open Trad Session</h1><p></p><h3>Ryan Young - Fiddle</h3><h3>David Foley - Guitar</h3><p></p><h2>About</h2><p>Join exceptional musicians <strong><strong>Ryan Young</strong></strong> and <strong><strong>David Foley</strong></strong> in a session to start the academic year. Everyone is welcome, whether you are an experienced session player, or if you are brand new to Scotland and want to find out what a session. This event is for people who have skills on an instrument and are interested in learning some tunes with Ryan and David.</p><p><strong><strong>Venue: </strong></strong>The workshop will take place in the University Concert Hall in the Main Building of the University of Glasgow.</p><p><strong><strong>Timings:</strong></strong> We begin at 5.15pm and go until around 6.45pm.</p><p><strong><strong>Instruments:</strong></strong> All and any instruments are welcome, however we cannot provide instruments, please bring your own. If you don't have one and want to hire an instrument, please visit our friends over at <a href="https://www.musicbroth.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><strong><strong>Music Broth</strong></strong></a><strong><strong> </strong></strong>which is Glasgow's musical instrument library. There is limited hand held percussion available.</p><p><strong><strong>Level: </strong></strong>We encourage anyone at any level of instrument proficiency to sign up. There will be no sheet music, we will be learning tunes by ear. Come with an open mind, and enjoy making music with this scratch session band!</p><p><strong><strong>Who can come: </strong></strong>This event is FREE and open to anyone - whether you are studying or working at University of Glasgow, affiliated with the University or not! Limited places, booking essential.</p><p><strong><strong>Livestream: </strong></strong>This is not a concert and will not be livestreamed, it is an in-person workshop.</p><p></p><h2>About the leaders</h2><h3><strong><strong>R</strong></strong>yan Young</h3><p>Ryan Young, a nominee for the MG ALBA Musician of The Year, is injecting fresh and innovative ideas into the realm of traditional Scottish music. He has gained international acclaim for his captivating fiddle interpretations. Ryan's debut album, produced in collaboration with four-time GRAMMY winner Jesse Lewis (notable for his work with artists such as Bela Fleck and Yo Yo Ma), was unveiled at the Feakle Traditional Music Festival in County Clare. He was accompanied by the renowned guitarist Dennis Cahill, known for his work with Martin Hayes and The Gloaming.Ryan's musical focus revolves around traditional Scottish tunes, but he breathes new life into age-old and sometimes forgotten melodies through his unique approach. His fiddle artistry is characterized by fresh melodic innovations, an infectious rhythmic energy, and an impressive range of dynamics and precision. His signature sound takes the audience on an emotional and adventurous journey with each performance. Ryan Young boasts an impressive academic background, holding both a first-class honours degree and a Masters from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He earned recognition as a finalist in the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards on two occasions and was twice a finalist in the prestigious BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of The Year competition. In 2017, he was honored with the 'Up And Coming Artist Of The Year' award at the Scots Trad Awards. In 2018, he received a Horizon Award nomination at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and was crowned Folking.com's Musician Of The Year. His accolades further extend to MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards nominations, including Album Of the Year and Folk Band Of The Year. Ryan Young was notably the sole UK artist chosen to perform at the esteemed World Music conference, WOMEX, in 2019. Ryan's second album 'Just a Second' was relaesed in the USA in September 2023 and will be released in the UK and Europe in October 2023.</p><p></p><h3><strong><strong>David Foley</strong></strong></h3><p>David is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and teacher from Glasgow. His instruments include the bodhran, flute, whistle and guitar. Growing up, playing Irish music in the Comhaltas movement, he was constantly involved in competitions – his most notable achievement was an All Ireland Bodhran Championship.</p><p>At the age of 16 he left school and went to study for a degree in Scottish traditional music at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Where he met Jack Smedley and Steven Blake, with whom he performs in award-winning folk band RURA. Outside of Scotland David makes regular visits to Sweden where he tours with the world music collective Världens Band. They fuse music from their respective cultures and party on stage!
