Have you ever wanted to be part of your own Vogue-inspired fashion shoot? Do you combine fashion and style influences from your past and present? Are your clothing choices inspired by different cultures and the hybrid cultures of London’s street style? If so, then the wonderfully talented and award-winning German artist and photographer Catrine Val would like to arrange a photoshoot with you.! Fascinated by London’s diversity and by the remarkable style solutions with which Londoners greet their daily lives, Catrine is coming to different locations across Queen Mary University of London to conduct photoshoots with an array of QMUL’s international students and (East) London residents who will be invited to ‘come as you are and become who you want to be’. Catrine’s work in colour photography is a vehicle for discussions around intercultural relations, migration, and the peripatetic nature of ‘home’. ‘Mobile Home’ is curated by Visiting Research Fellow Jana Riedel and PhD Candidate Matthew Shaul, QMUL.

Photo sessions will be done on a drop-in basis. If you need to arrange a specific time, please contact the organisers.Participants must be over the age of 16 (model release forms must be signed).The photoshoot will take place in the Pathology Museum, which can be found on the 3rd Floor Robin Brook Centre at St Bartholomew's Hospital. The Pathology Museum is not accessible for wheelchair users.

BiographiesCatrine Val is an international conceptual artist, working in the field of photography, film and performance. Her work focusses particularly on women’s often unacknowledged leadership roles in culture, philosophy and commerce. Born in Cologne where she studied at the The Academy of Media Arts, she was assistant to Austrian Conceptual artist Valie Export. She has collaborated in her work with women in India, South America, Asia and Europe. She has extensive international exhibition history and was the winner of the WMA Commission 2019, WYNG Foundation Hong Kong www.catrineval.comJana Riedel is a Visiting Research Fellow at the Centre for Anglo-German Cultural Relations at Queen Mary University of London. A cultural historian and curator with a developing interest in fashion and identity as it relates to migration and exile studies, her doctoral research established Prince Albert as a major agent of European cultural transfer. Previously, she was Arts &amp; Culture Manager at Queen Mary University where she established partnerships with Arts Council England, Tate Exchange and the Nunnery Gallery (Bow Arts Trust). She currently works as Research Projects Officer at the Victoria and Albert Museum.Matthew Shaul is a PhD Candidate at the Centre for Anglo-German Cultural Relations at Queen Mary University of London. He established and ran Departure Lounge Contemporary Art (https://departure-lounge.org.uk/) in Luton from 2010 to 2022. He was artistic director at the University of Hertfordshire Galleries until 2017. He has an ongoing interest in modern and contemporary photography, in particular the photography of the former GDR. He curated the touring exhibition ‘Do Not Refreeze – Photography Behind the Berlin Wall’ – between 2007–10. He is a regular contributor to international photography festivals like Rencontres d’Arles and the Houston Fotofest.

This event is part of Being Human Festival, the UK’s national festival of the humanities, taking place 9–18 November 2023. Led by the School of Advanced Study, University of London, with generous support from Research England, in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Academy.
