Join Dr Bruce Bao at the MCI for a captivating ECR discussion on Western views of China in natural language.

How is China seen in Western eyes? This talk will shed new light on this question by presenting a series of quantitative studies to uncover multiple facets of Western views of China embedded in natural language. For initial intuitive insights, two pilot studies explored semantic representations and open-ended divergent associations of “China/Chinese” using basic natural language processing methods with large-scale English text corpora. For more rigorous and systematic examinations, three formal studies grounded in psychological theories of social cognition used large AI language models and a new method called the “Fill-Mask Association Test” (FMAT) to examine Western (1) stereotypes of, (2) emotional responses to, and (3) behavioural tendencies toward Chinese people and the Chinese government. Overall, the novel findings from these five studies will contribute to a deeper social-psychological understanding of China as seen by the West and thus promote mutual understanding between the West and China.

A﻿bout the Speaker<a href="https://research.manchester.ac.uk/en/persons/han-wu-shuang-bao" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dr BAO Han-Wu-Shuang (Bruce)</a> is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Manchester China Institute, University of Manchester. His current research focuses on computational intelligent social psychology, an emerging interdisciplinary field that uses AI language models (e.g., BERT, GPT), natural language processing (NLP), and quantitative methods to study and better understand society and culture at the population level.

N﻿otesMCI’s ECR Workshops are lunchtime seminars held in person at the <a href="https://www.mci.manchester.ac.uk/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Manchester China Institute</a>. They seek to bring together students, faculty, and staff who can best provide feedback as Early Career Researchers develop their ideas. Free lunch will be provided.
