For the second Four Nations Secure Care Symposium our focus is those working in secure care, and the challenges facing the sector.

Back in March 2023 CYCJ hosted the first 4 Nations Secure Care symposium which brought together academics, practitioners and students for a highly succesful event exploring the latest research into the use of secure care across the United Kingdom.F﻿or this follow up event our focus is on the workforce and three separate projects that each offer new perspectives on some of the challenges facing those who work in the secure care arena. Join us for presentations from:Dr E﻿mma Miller (Talking Hope) Dr C﻿aroline Andow and Stefan Kleipoedszus (Bournemouth University)D﻿ave Clarke, Service Lead – Secure Estates Lincolnshire County CouncilO﻿ne of the strengths of the March event was the level of interaction and dialogue it stimulated. This is something we're looking to replicate in November - there will be plenty of opportunities for attendees to contribute, drawing on their own experiences. Dr Emma Miller will share how the Talking Hope project emerged in 2018 from discussions about priorities in and around secure care, and how it has evolved since then. The presentation will touch on hope theory and why it is so important for young people who are identified as being at risk. The main focus will be staff perspectives on how they find hope in the work they do, and how their own and other organisations can support them to stay hopeful even in the most challenging circumstances. This will include examples from the 'hope reservoir' Caroline Andow and Stefan Kleipoedszus are working as part of a large multidisciplinary team of academics looking to re-imagine secure care for children. In this presentation, they share their current research on the experiences of staff working within secure children’s homes in England. They detail their innovative use of Lego Serious Play methodology to engage participants in focus group discussions. With illustrative examples of models created by the participants, Caroline and Stefan demonstrate that despite reported recruitment and retention crises within the sector, staff are positive about their experiences.Dave Clarke holds both the DIPSW and RNMH qualifications and has been a registered manager for over 25 years, working across homes catering for Adults with Learning Difficulties, residential children’s homes and for the last 17 years as the Manager of Lincolnshire Secure Unit. He chaired the Secure Accommodation Network (the organisation that represents all SCH’s in England and Wales) between 2015 – 2021. His presentation will explore recruitment and retention issues and initiatives within Secure Children’s Homes, concentrating specifically on steps taken within Lincolnshire Secure Unit.This webinar is suitable for those with lived experience, practitioners, policy makers and students.
