TWIC & BRISC Autumn Conference

TWIC is the Local Environmental Records Centre for south east and part of central Scotland that collects, collates and disseminates information about the wildlife in our area. The Centre is a not-for-profit company with charitable status and provides objective, independent wildlife information for people and organisations.TWIC is the focal point for biological recording in our area and is working to increase our knowledge of the land, freshwater and marine wildlife throughout our region. The Centre provides a wide range of data services; we routinely supply data to local authorities for screening planning applications, to consultants for preparing environmental assessments and to students and academics for research.The ongoing development of TWIC and its services is funded by grant aid from NatureScot, service level agreements with local authorities and income from contract work, projects and voluntary contributions.TWIC is a company registered in Scotland (No SC234339) and a registered Scottish Charity SC034113.

The conference will include a varied and diverse programme of talks, exhibits and open mike sessions.

<p>TWIC and BRISC are pleased to present our first joint Autumn Conference. Talks will centre round how we go about attracting and supporting new recorders, including younger naturalists, and the role that technology can play. </p><p>Anyone interested in wildlife recording and conservation in Scotland are welcome to attend. Join us for a full and diverse programme of talks, a chance to catch up with friends and meet new people and find out about recording initiatives from across the region.</p><p>The event will also host TWIC&#x27;s and BRISC&#x27;s AGMs and the presentation of the Bob Saville Award.</p><p>Delegates are very welcome to promote their own recording initiative during the open mike session, or by providing a poster or display at the conference. If either of these is of interest, please provide details on the registration form. </p><p>There will be a chance to purchase raffle tickets and some second hand books at the event, so please bring cash. We would also welcome donations of any raffle prizes - please bring them on the day.</p><h2>Saturday Conference Programme</h2><ul><li>10:00: Registration opens. Raffle tickets will be available to purchase (please bring cash).</li></ul><p><strong>Session 2: Michael Scott (TWIC Director)</strong></p><ul><li>12:00: Better Biodiversity Data (BBD) Project update  - Christine Tansey (NBN Trust)</li><li>12:20: BRISC Bursary talks - Anna Redpath</li><li>12:35: TWIC AGM: All welcome, but only TWIC members can vote on any resolutions.</li><li>12:55: BRISC AGM. </li><li>13:10: Lunch break (buffet lunch provided). Please take the opportunity to look at the displays and purchase any raffle tickets.</li></ul><p><strong>Session 3: Chair: Jonathan Willet (BRISC)</strong></p><ul><li>14:10: Mapping Mammals: Recording the most elusive wildlife in our living landscapes - Matt Larsen-Daw (Mammal Society)</li><li>14:30: Open Mike Session - Fife Nature Records Centre – Lindsay Bamforth; Bryological Recording – Liz Kungu (British Bryological Society); Using BirdTrack – Eilidh McNab (Scottish Ornithologists&#x27; Club)</li><li>14:45: Tea/coffee break. Raffle prizes may be claimed at this tea break and conference end.</li></ul><p><strong>Session 4: Chair: Jonathan Willet (BRISC)</strong></p><ul><li>15:15:  Life as a Developing Ecological Surveying Skills (DESS) trainee with Scottish Wildlife Trust - Then &amp; Now - Eilidh McNab</li><li>15:40:  TWIC Bob Saville Award presentation </li><li>15:55:  Summing up</li><li>16:00:  Conference ends</li></ul><p><em>Please note that the programme may be subject to change.</em></p><h2>Sunday Field Meetings - cancelled</h2><p>We are sorry to say that Sunday&#x27;s field meetings have been cancelled. A list of sites will be available on Saturday for self-led outings. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.</p><h3>Booking details:</h3><p><strong>Booking essential. </strong></p><h3>Tickets cost: </h3><p>£17 (student £11). The ticket price includes a buffet lunch and  teas/coffees served throughout the day.</p><p>Donations are also welcome and will help cover the cost of this event. Donations received will be split between TWIC and BRISC.</p><h3>Deadline for bookings: </h3><p>The booking deadline is end of <strong>3 November 2023 </strong> due to catering requirements.</p><h3>Getting to the venue: </h3><p>Stirling High is readily accessible via public transport. The venue is 1.3 miles from Stirling train station (29 mins walk). Alternatively Bus no. 38 stops on the main road by the school and takes  about 13 mins from the train station.
