Georgian Illuminations

Dilettanti was founded by Sarah Bowles and Philippa Barton in 1980 to encourage the study and the enjoyment of the arts. The programme of events is made up of full and half days of visits, often combining  background lectures by expert speakers, which provide a context to the particular subject.

Sir John Soane's Museum

<p><strong>Louise Stewart, Curator of Exhibitions, Sir John Soane’s Museum </strong>will take us around this intriguing exhibition which, with original drawings, designs and prints, as well as two surviving early nineteenth-century transparencies, explores the popular practice in the Georgian age of creating spectacular light displays, created by using glass lamps and candles and celebrating events such as royal birthdays, jubilees and national events such as the defeat of Napoleon.</p>
