Embedding data management into your research: a practical approach

Research funders often now expect a data management plan to be submitted as part of a funding bid. Research data is defined as any digital object created or collected during the course of research (documents, still images, video and audio files, spreadsheets, computer code, databases, websites, etc.), in addition to physical objects such as sketchbooks, diaries, lab notebooks, portfolios, and the documentation of practice-based research. Effective management of this data, from its creation through to its sharing and archiving, requires focussed planning from the outset.This workshop is aimed at researchers who would like to understand the basic principles of research data management, what funder expectations are, and what support is available to the research community at the University of Westminster.By the end of the session attendees will be able to: <ul><li> Understand the broader principles of data management planning, funder expectations, why managing data is important, and who is available to help at Westminster</li><li> Take away some practical tips on better managing research data and records/documentation</li><li> Work through a data management plan example to put the principles into practice.</li></ul>This workshop will be delivered by Jenny Evans, Head of Research and Scholarly Communications and Rebecca Short, Senior Records Manager. Participants are asked to be prepared to talk about a project they are working on.
