In 2023 he completed 'The Deepest Breath,' a Netflix feature documentary about the risks and rewards of freediving, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. His work on 'The Tinder Swindler' (2022) helped make the film the most watched feature documentary in Netflix's history at the time, clocking 166 million views in its first month of release and garnering 5 Emmy nominations, including Best Editing. In 2018 Julian co-edited 'American Animals,' Bart Layton's narrative follow-up to his BAFTA award-winning 'Imposter.' Starring Evan Peters and Barry Keoghan, 'American Animals' tells the true story of four Kentucky college students who attempt to steal precious art books worth millions of dollars from their university library. 'American Animals' premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for 11 BIFA awards, winning Best Editing and Best Debut Screenwriter. Julian has directed four drama-documentaries for US television, filming on location in America, Canada and South Africa.

Julian Hart on his edit for The Deepest BreathAs soon as I read the treatment for THE DEEPEST BREATH I was hooked. Sporting obsession, a love story, a tragedy — all set against the backdrop of an extreme sport that pushes the limits of human physiology. The story’s breadth and power leapt from the page. I was aware of freediving but knew nothing of the details of elite level competition, nor Alessia and Stephen’s stories. This put me in the same position as most of our audience, which was perfect; if it made sense to me it might work for people who are not as familiar with the sport. I watched thousands of dives from years of competition and training across the globe to best tell our protagonists’ stories and convey the technicalities and dangers of a sport few people are familiar with. One of Alessia’s dives stood out from the rest. It answered the film’s first challenge — how to convey the danger of the sport by feeling it, rather than being told. We would watch her dive in real time. Hold our breath with her. Descend into the dark. That opening dive made the first-ever cut of the film.Sound was key to immersing the audience in the experience of freediving. In the dark there is little visual point of reference. It is the sound of the changing depth in the freedives that we were keen to enhance throughout the editing process. Incorporating sound design whilst the offline edit was ongoing allowed us to give the film the space and time it needed for the audio to fulfill its storytelling potential.As important as freediving is to the story it was Alessia and Stephen’s life experiences that were key to our connection to them. In the film both are searching for something, meaning, their place in the world. Stephen had dozens of hours of video and audio and hundreds of photos of his worldwide travels. Watching his personal growth documented in this way was fascinating. Alessia’s drive was there in an essay she wrote as a little girl — to be the best, to follow her dream. It was an honour to watch two people finding each other across the globe whilst trying to achieve their dreams.
