Edinburgh Literary Salon

Our November Salon is moved to coincide with Book Week Scotland, and our event theme is ‘The Fun of Self-Publishing.’

Book Week Scotland – now in its twelfth year – is an annual celebration of books and reading that takes place in November. This year it runs from the 13th to the 19th, which is why our monthly Salon Event is earlier than usual, and the theme of the week is Adventure. So, we’ve asked two of our friends to talk about self-publishing, which is certainly an adventure. First, Salon regular Barbara Bryan, who has had a varied career as a broadcaster, a tutor (in Radio at Telford and Stevenson colleges, and after reading Law at Edinburgh University, for the Adult Education Programme) and reviewer of Classical music, Theatre, and Dance. After having poetry published, and a short play performed in New York, Barbara self-published a historical fiction novel called McCulloch’s Dilemma. Weaving factual events with fiction, the story is set in Edinburgh in 1792 - a politically turbulent time in Britain. Barbara will be in conversation with V.E.H. Masters who has self-published four historical fiction novels which are regularly on the Amazon Bestseller List, and who is the winner of the Barbara Hammond Trophy. Vicki has a BA in History and Sociology, and an MSc with distinction. For years she worked in the NHS as an organisational development manager and latterly ran her own business as an executive coach and team development specialist. Following our fabulous publication of The Golden Hours, our Salons continue to feature writers from the anthology. We look forward to introducing another contributor, Ash Caton. We'll hear about, and watch, some of Ash's work as a literary podcaster - another form of self-publishing - including his poem 'Hutton's Section' from the book. It is our aim to hold up to three Salon Events per year in an accessible venue, and for Book Week Scotland we are delighted to hold this year’s event at Central Library, in the George Washington Brown room. We open as usual with a drinks reception, but please note that since we need to vacate the building by 8pm we have changed our timings from usual. We’re delighted to be able to continue socialising afterwards at our old haunt, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/thewashbar/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The Wash Bar</a>. Places for the in-person event are limited, but we warmly encourage those who cannot attend at Central Library to join us on zoom.It is free to register for all of our events. If you can’t afford to donate, you are still welcome. Our two anthologies are on sale <a href="https://www.edinburghliterarysalon.org/shop" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">here</a>, and books will be available to purchase on the night. We look forward to seeing you in person or in the zoom-room. Accessibility Notice Edinburgh Literary Salon is open to all those with an interest in all aspects of Literature, whether professional or personal, and to all parts of the industry: writers, publishers, booksellers etc. All are welcome, and events have free registration. We strive to ensure straightforward registration. We intend to livestream this event; if there is a problem accessing zoom, we will do what we can to assist. At the Library, the GWB room is accessible via a small lift, so some of the larger electric type wheelchairs do not fit. There is a Hearing Aid loop. The disabled toilet is in the children’s library some distance away from the room where our event will be held. We invite positive feedback on how we can improve, even within our limitations as a non-funded organisation. We welcome open conversation.
