HOSB Presents: Philosophy Slam!

The House of St Barnabas is a charity pledging to break the cycle of homelessness and social exclusion in London. They run a social enterprise, a not-for-profit members’ club, to help the people they support back into lasting paid work.Their Employment Academy offers accredited qualifications, on-site work experience, real job opportunities and mentoring. The House of St Barnabas are seeking to redefine the notion of a members’ club, to challenge stereotypes around the idea of exclusivity and to create a different kind of membership.The club is a creative, socially conscious and vibrant space.

Join us on the 9th of January for the launch of the Philosophy Slam event, hosted by Robert Rowland Smith and Mark Vernon.

Throw yourself into a free-flowing hour of improvisation where two leading philosophers riff on whatever - from aardvarks to zeitgeist - you"The Philosophy Slam format with Mark and Robert is deeply thought-provoking, insightful, and engaging, not only that, but it’s also incredibly fun … The format is one of the most original I’ve come across, it’s highly versatile and can be used to warm up audiences at conferences or inspire leaders about specific themes on training days. I’ve commissioned philosophy slams with all sorts of FTSE100 clients who have hugely enjoyed it. The only problem is it’s too short!" How does it work? People gather. Mark and Robert stand up. Someone from the audience calls out a random word. In the past, we have had words as serious as 'death' and 'consciousness' and as silly as 'smoothies' and 'crocodiles'. Mark and Robert each speak for a few minutes on the topic, drawing on the history of ideas.
