The webinars are structured in two halves, with a presentation for the first half.  From the outset these webinars invite interactive discussions with network members.  For example, speakers may provide pointers for discussions by posting specific questions to the audience, explore possibilities for future pilot studies, or ask specialists in other areas to give feedback on particular aspects of their work.  The second half (30 mins) then opens the floor for discussion.

A Holistic Approach Towards Reliable Subject-level fNIRS ImagingIn the last decade, functional NIRS (fNIRS) has become a widespread and powerful neuroimaging tool for studying neurodevelopment in the brain. Substantial improvements in both device development (e.g., portability, ergonomics) and analytical methods (e.g., motion artifact detection and correction, statistically robust models, amongst others) have enabled using fNIRS for investigating cortical hemodynamics across the pediatric lifespan, especially in the age range where using fMRI is not reasonably feasible or practical. However, fNIRS is still being unfavorably compared to other neuroimaging modalities due to its alleged poor reliability at the subject level (i.e., test-retest repeatability) that may limit its applicability to group-level findings. This presentation describes commonly adopted and proposed approaches and tools for evaluating and ensuring repeatability of fNIRS measurements, with the hope of stimulating a discussion amongst R4N engineers and scientists on which critical efforts are mostly needed to make reliable subject-level fNIRS scanning a reality.
