The past, present, and future of kaolin exploitation in Cornwall

This lecture will be presented by Bill Cooper, Resource Geologist (Imerys UK)

This talk will touch briefly on the history of kaolin mining in Cornwall, before focussing on the current operations of the sole producer (Imerys UK) and the challenges that are faced, and then finally looking at what the future may look like upon cessation of mining.

Kaolin (or 'China clay') has been worked in Cornwall for more than 250 years, producing over 170 million tonnes of valuable material. This versatile commodity has a multitude of uses and applications, many of which are taken for granted in the modern day. Ongoing exploitation of this finite resource now presents new challenges, as many of the remaining pits near the end of their life.

Bill Cooper MSc ACSM MIMMM is a geologist who has worked in the mining industry for 16 years, in a variety of roles. These include underground and open pit mining geology in the Eastern Goldfields of Australia, mineral exploration in Australia and Western USA, and exploration and resource estimation consulting in the UK.
