This annual lecture provides inspiring ideas and practical tips to frame your learning, teaching and student support.

We are delighted to announce that Professor Tansy Jessop, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Education and Students) at the University of Bristol will give the annual Inspiring Learning New Year Lecture. The theme of the lecture will be “Taking a programme approach to engage students in assessment and feedback”.We invite you to join us on Thursday 18 January 8-9am UK | 12-1pm Dubai | 4-5pm Malaysia. The event is open all Heriot-Watt staff and colleagues across the tertiary education sector. BSL interpretation will be available. Abstract:Prof Jessop will be discussing the value of taking a programme approach to assessment and feedback and the positive impacts for learners. She will explore how episodic, one-off assessment with disconnected feedback leads to peculiar perceptions of the purpose of assessment and feedback for our students, including, how that moves the focus to become all about measuring performance and getting grades. She suggests that this means that making sense of learning becomes a formidable task when there is not a compelling story joining the dots between individual assessments on single modules and the big picture. This New Year Lecture will draw upon evidence from ‘Transforming the Experience of Students through Assessment’ (TESTA) to identify ways of constructing assessment and feedback that engages students across their programmes of study. It will examine assessment design and feedback practices which nurture students’ agency, develop well-founded confidence, and fine-tune their capacity to evaluate what ‘good’ looks like.

About the Speaker:Professor Tansy Jessop was born in South Africa and educated at the universities of Cape Town and KwaZulu-Natal. She completed her PhD at the University of Southampton and worked as an education consultant for DFID and the British Council in Palestine and India. She was Professor of Research-Informed Teaching at Solent University and Head of Learning and Teaching at the University of Winchester. She leads the 'Transforming the Experience of Students through Assessment' (TESTA) research and change project, now used across the world. She has published on assessment and feedback, research-informed teaching, learning spaces and social justice in education, and was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship in 2016 for her work on TESTA and her creative approach to teaching in higher education.
