Trauma Informed Yoga and Mindfulness Workshop

Our events are art projects that aims to rethink and deconstruct our visual culture from a gender perspective. Our main objective is to open arts and culture to a wider audience and reflect upon social matters affecting women and others, such as:Body representation and the effects of the hyper-sexualization of women's and girls' bodies in our current visual cultureBeauty standards and their impact on our relationships with othersSex education and relationshipsGender stereotypes and role modelsInvisible violence against women in media and its effects on contemporary societiesWomen artists and their hidden herstories, and how these relate to our presentOur mission is to raise awareness and contribute to reducing violence against women, young people, and girls by reflecting on social matters that affect us all, using art and visual literacy as the main tool. At the same time we aim to celebrate and bring to the fore inspiring hidden herstories that have the power to uplift and empower us all.Through our events we want to contribute to building healthier relationships in communities based on respect, equity, acceptance, and consent.

A yoga and mindfulness session that will set us on a journey to reconnect with our own bodies and minds.

Ugly Duck

A yoga and mindfulness workshop led by <a href="https://www.lorettacurtin.com" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Loretta Curtin</a>, who through a series of movements and choices will set us on a journey to reconnect with our own bodies and minds. Open to all women*. This session has been designed for survivors of any kind of violence or for all of us women suffering and/or recoving from trauma, but everyone will be welcome. Please bring your own yoga mat.<h3>What is Trauma?</h3>Trauma is an emotional response to a negative event or a series of negative events. An estimated 90% of the population has been exposed to a traumatic event*. Trauma is complicated. It can be obvious, with a clear cause, and symptoms that seem to make sense. Or, trauma can be buried beneath depression, anxiety, and anger, without any recognizable origin. The causal event may have occurred a week ago, or half a century in the past.<h3></h3><h3>Principles of Trauma-Informed Yoga:</h3>We assume that anyone walking through the door may have experienced trauma.We recognize our students as experts on their bodies and experiences.We aim to create a safe, comfortable space that is empowering for all students.We strive to provide options and modifications for yoga poses recognizing that there is no “ideal” shape.We avoid too much stimulation with music, scents, objects in the room, lights, etc.We acknowledge that some poses and yoga props might make students feel vulnerable.We refrain from rigid statements and cueing and instead use language of inquiry and choice.We refrain from giving “hands-on assists” or apply them cautiously if we do use them.We teach postures, movements, and ways of breathing that facilitate calmness.
