Come and join us for a navigation skills day around the Mendip Hills. We will start in The Swan Inn for a coffee (and breakfast if you fancy) for an introduction to map reading, we will then head out into the hills to practice what we've learnt. At the end of the day we will head back into the pub to learn about the apps available and to re-cap the day.

What we will cover:

Understanding map symbols and what they mean
Different strategies for navigating effectively
Practicing outside in a safe, supportive and judgement-free group
Building confidence by drip-feeding skills and taking it one step at a time
Measuring distances on a map
W orking out timings based on distance
W hen, how and why you would take a bearing on a compass
U sing a GPS alternative

A bout your instructor:

Hi I'm Alice, a qualified mountain leader and CEO of The Adventure Girls Club. I'm passionate about reconnecting women back to nature through adventure and outdoor skills. I set up the club because I didn't feel like I belonged in the outdoor community and I wanted to create a safe space for women like me to head out and enjoy the outdoors in their own way.

I spent years believing that I was 'rubbish' at navigation, until I met a great teacher who gave me the confidence to head out and practice without judgement. Now, I'm not only an excellent navigator but I also LOVE it, it adds an extra element of fun to a walk and helps me stay present and mindful. I now want to teach other women that navigation isn't scary or out of reach, but it's actually fun and enjoyable!

What to bring:

Hiking boots
Plenty of snacks and a packed lunch
Rucksack
Water (at least 1 litre)
Weather appropriate clothing
You can bring your own map & compass if you have them

Transport:

We will meet at The Swan Inn Rowberrow.

By Car: There is a large car park right next to the pub, it is free for customers so just as long as you buy a coffee from them you wont need to pay.

By train/bus: If you are travelling from Bristol the best bus to get is the Falcon megabus to Plymouth and get off at Star Boadway Junction. It is a 20 minute walk from there to the pub.

Liftshare: It would be great to liftshare as much as possible, if you can offer someone a lift please either post in the Geneva app (for members) or in the Facebook group.

Safety:

I like to make these hikes as enjoyable as possible for everyone, so I keep a slow and steady pace. It's about taking in the views and being in nature, not about rushing to the finish line. Having said that, you are responsible for your own health and safety. If you are unsure as to whether you are fit to come on these hikes, please either consult your doctor or let me know your concerns.

I am a qualified mountain leader and I am level 3 Outdoor First Aid trained so I will be on hand in case of an emergency.

Refund Policy

Refunds will only be given if the event is cancelled. If you can no longer attend you are more than welcome to sell your ticket to someone else but please let me know if you do so.
