Overview
Award winning film on India's small cotton farmers, burdened with debt. What impact has GM cotton seeds had on their situation?
Cotton for My Shroud
Written and directed by Nandan Saxena and Kavita Bahl, this documentary tells the story from the farmers' viewpoint. Filmed on two extensive visits to the Vidarbha region, in Maharashtra State, it reveals the high rates of farmer suicides.
What is causing these deaths? The sky high interest rates charged by private moneylenders, crop fluctuations and failures and falling world prices for cotton appear to be factors. But what role has Monsanto's heavily promoted and expensive genetically modified "Bt" cotton seeds played in the farmers' tragedy?
The film-makers interview a number of experts in their investigation. An attempt will be made to update our audience on more recent developments since this film was made.
Saleh Mamon, a personal friend of the film makers, has kindly agreed to hold a Q&A after the screening.
