Significant Seams

A half-day workshop artmaking with the season: May should feature lots of new growth and colour, with scope for eco-dyeing

In this workshop, we will be inspired by interacting with the various gardens where the studio is situated. Across about an acre, there is a small formal 'white garden,' a gently structured kitchen garden, woodland orchard (hopefully apple, plum, and cherry blossom will be in full bloom), lawn and grasses area, and a tropical section with various bamboo and giant gunnera. Beyond is a further wild woodland featuring natural springs bubbling up from the earth around.Our Artist Facilitator will introduce a number of creative activities including direct printing from plants (flower pounding), sun printing and shadow drawing. A dye pot for steamed bundles will be on offer. We will each collect some specimens that appeal to us, and create from these, experimenting with techniques and creating new, meaningful materials: particularly personally meaningful fabrics for other projects.In the Apple Studio itself, we have a rich array of tools and materials to enable your artistic impulses further. In Significant Seams workshops we will happily guide you in a sample project, and will have one or two planned makes on offer: but we love to spark your ideas and help you to delve into the inspiration and nuture it into a personally meaningful project - whether or not it is fully realisable on the day. We want to help you find your way into making - through pausing, protecting, and leaning into the space of observation and creation.Our workshop is limited to 5 attendees, to ensure everyone has personal and meaningful attention from Catherine and opportunity to connect with one another and we are comfortable in the workshop space available.Teas and coffees will be available onsite, however there are no other amenities in Knowle.If you are travelling for this workshop experience, we can recommend <a href="https://www.thenewinncoleford.co.uk/" title="https://www.thenewinncoleford.co.uk/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The New Inn, Coleford</a> for local and atmospheric accomodation. They are a 3-minute drive and leisurely 20 minute walk through Devon countryside along a public (though very rural and in places quite muddy) footpath.We'd be happy to provide further advice and guidance about the area. We are 25 minutes from downtown Exeter and the beautiful University grounds (formerly botanical gardens!) and 10 minutes from lovely Crediton, with fabulous antique and charity shops and lovely locally owned cafes.
