In the late 19th and early 20th centuries Charlotte Mew, Dorothy Richardson and Virginia Woolf all drew inspiration from walking alone in London; observing and enjoying street life. Woolf called it "street haunting". The sights and sounds of London run through their novels, stories, essays and poetry.
