Our speaker will share her experience and the path into translating literature

Speaker's Bio:Julija Gulbinovič holds a Bachelor’s degree in Lithuanian Philology and Foreign (Croatian) Language from Vilnius University (2006) and an MA in Human Geography from Queen Mary University of London (2008). She worked as a community interpreter from 2010 until 2019. This experience allowed her to develop and realise her passion for literary translation. Her first translation, of Postmortem Trilogy by Croatian author Mate Matišić, from Croatian into Lithuanian appeared in 2012 and received the Dominykas Urbas award for best debut translation. Then followed translations into Lithuanian of Serbian classic Miloš Crnjanski’s Migrations (2017), Dubravka Ugrešić’s Fox (2021) and the EU Prize for Literature recipient Daina Opolskaitė’s book of short stories Pyramids of Days from Lithuanian into Croatian. Her fifth literary translation, of Minor Detail by Palestinian author Adania Shibli, from Arabic into Lithuanian, will be published later this year. Alongside translating into the mother tongue, Julija has been developing as a literary translator into English. In 2017-2018, she held a literary translation fellowship with the British Council and the Lithuanian Culture Institute, within which she was mentored by award-winning writer and translator Jen Calleja. Julija attended the BCLT literary translation summer school at UEA in 2017 and 2018, and held a translation residency by the Lithuanian Culture Institute in 2018, besides numerous other workshops, events and pitching opportunities. Her first translation into English, of Lithuanian author Virginija Kulvinskaitė’s Juvenilia, appeared in 2023 as part of chapbooks series of Lithuanian writing by Strangers Press, UK.The talk will cover:<ul><li>Getting into community interpreting</li><li>Practice and challenges</li><li>Moving into literary translation into Lithuanian</li><li>Moving into translating into English as a non-native speaker</li><li>Relevant organisations, opportunities and events for those interested in literary translation</li><li>Where next</li><li>Q&amp;A</li></ul>
