Gather plants for free: Learn propagation techniques

St Ann’s Allotments are the oldest and largest area of Victorian detached town gardens in the world, and are Grade 2* Listed by English Heritage. The site covers 75 acres, has 700 gardens, over 30 miles of hedgerow and 2000 fruit trees, many of which are heritage varieties.STAA deliver outreach programmes to allow all members of the community to benefit from the site, including children’s activities on the Community Orchard, and volunteering opportunities on Urban Nature, Nursery, and Heritage Display gardens.

Workshops

Our seasonal learning programme is designed to help people get into gardening for wellbeing, whether that be foraging the hedgerow, making a seasonal wreath, or learning how to compost.

<p>Want to learn how to create plants for free?! Come and spend the afternoon touring our gardens trying out different propagation techniques. Once you have mastered this skill you will be able to easily produce all manner of herb, fruit and ornamental plants throughout the year.</p><ul><li>Learn by observing nature in action how we can reproduce plants.</li><li>Try out a variety of different techniques such as stem cuttings and layering.</li><li>Understand the principles behind propagation techniques, and the best methods for tending to them during their establishment.</li><li>Take cuttings from your favourites home.</li></ul><p>Facilitated by Sam from STAA, this workshop takes place on the beautiful Nursery Garden at St Ann's Allotments.</p>

<h3>Workshop details</h3><p><strong>Capacity:</strong> The maximum group size will be 10 people.</p><p><strong>Tickets:</strong> The ticket price includes materials, and all tools will be provided.</p><p><strong>Facilities:</strong> A compost toilet is available at the Nursery with hand sanitizer for hand washing.</p><p><strong>Clothing:</strong> Please dress for the weather, and wear comfortable foot wear. The garden is a 5-minute walk from the entrance to the allotments.</p><p><strong>Parking:</strong> There is plenty of free roadside parking along Ransom Road.</p><p><strong>Contact:</strong> If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us at info@staa-allotments.org.uk</p>

<h3>About Sam from STAA</h3><p>Sam works on our Nursery and Heritage Display gardens and has many years experience growing fruit and vegetables as well as working in a cut flower garden.</p>

<h3>About the Nursery</h3><p>This workshop will take place on our Nursery Garden, a unique and accessible garden for everyone to learn about growing food. It is maintained by volunteers and community groups, and our fresh produce is directed back to local food banks and community cafes. </p><p>There is a large commercial-scale glasshouse, and at the top of a classroom with beautiful views over the allotments. </p><p>St Ann’s Allotments are Grade 2* Listed by Historic England, and designated an Area of Importance for Nature Conservation. It is the oldest and largest are of Victorian detached town gardens in the UK, with over 700-years of history, 500 gardens, and 32 miles of hedgerow.</p>

<h3>About STAA</h3><p>This event is organised by STAA, a small charity that manages a number of highly regarded projects across 30+ plots at St Ann's Allotments that provide community benefit and offer a wide variety of volunteering opportunities.</p>
