Play streets for community development

Playing Outis a national organisation supporting a growing UK-wide street play movement. As well as thousands of people working on a voluntary basis in their own streets and cities, we have a small staff team based in Bristol.

In some communities facing greater disadvantage, the need may be even greater, as well as the barriers to community organising. However, the positive impact of claiming space for play and for parents and neighbours to come together can be huge - and can also lead to many other actions and benefits.Our resident-led play street model has been adapted over the years for communities in different housing types and those facing bigger challenges and disadvantages. The results were amazing - for children, families and neighbours of all ages and backgrounds - and the idea began to spread.Seeing the huge benefits to children and communities, Bristol City Council developed the Temporary Play Street regular road closures were allowed to happen (up to once a week) and other councils began to do this too.Today, play streets have spread around the UK and internationally as a temporary way to give children safe space to play on their doorstep. Over 1600 street communities and estates have regularly played out in the UK, with over 49,000 children benefitting and 24,500 adults taking action in their own communities. We estimate a minimum of 1 million extra playing out hours have happened this way.Playing Out CIC was formed early on in this journey and is now a national organisation, supporting parents and residents, councils and professionals, to restore children’s freedom to play out in the streets and spaces near to where they live, for their health, happiness and sense of belonging.
