In this ECR Workshop, Dr Elisa Gambino explores transnational networks &amp; the internationalisation of Chinese private capital in West Africa.

This talk is part of the Hallsworth project “African hubs, Chinese trade, and global circulation” focused on Chinese trade in West Africa and their implications for regional integration, which underpins the region’s development agenda. Chinese actors have increasingly become a potent force in African (political) economies. While Chinese economic presence is often discussed in terms of state-owned sector internationalisation and development finance, the vast majority of Chinese companies on the African continent are private. Often side-lined in academic and policy research due to their relatively small size and ‘localised’ presence, Chinese private companies – import-export in particular – have become crucial actors in the economic and political lives of African countries. Similarly through their state-owned counterparts, private businesses often expand in African markets with and through the forging, support, and negotiating of transnational networks, bringing to the forefront the necessity to further unpack companies’ multiple embeddedness. Specifically, the paper examines the extent to which business groups/voluntary associations, networks in the context of operation, and (dis)connections to Chinese state actors shape company internationalisation. The project is crucial to better understand the workings of Chinese overseas economic engagement, as private businesses operate outside the state-backed frameworks characteristic of large-scale (bilateral) projects.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERDr Elisa Gambino is the Hallworth Research Fellow in Political Economy at the Global Development Institute (University of Manchester). Her project, titled “African hubs, Chinese trade, and global circulation,” focuses on the networks of Chinese companies and entrepreneurs increasingly engaged in cross-border exchanges in West Africa.
