Metal is an artistic laboratory who champion the need for artistic innovation in the UK and provide practical support to artists of all genres. We proudly present a range of festivals, art events, classes, residencies, culture labs, and more from our three sites in Southend, Liverpool and Peterborough.Metal Southend is based in the beautiful grounds of Chalkwell Park, hosting creative events and workshops from Chalkwell Hall, Metal Art School and a variety of local arts venues.

Come along to Lucky Dip!Lucky Dip is back at Chalkwell Hall for March 6th 2024! This quarterly event is a chance for local artists and creatives to meet some new faces, connect, share ideas and celebrate the joy in art. Lucky Dip is formatted as an evening of two halves:First up, a creative workshop led by our guest artist host for this month, Elspeth Billie Penfold.Elspeth will guide us through her dynamic artistic practice which combines walking, weaving and performative story telling. After a performance and short video, attendees will be invited to explore the conceptual and physical creative space through a historical textile technique known as ‘quipu’. The session will end collaboratively with the assemblage of a woven vara pole, connecting threads and poetry. The second half?It’s all about mingling and our lucky dip tombola!Come with something to share, to spark collaborations, and even throw those creative challenges you’ve been chewing on into the mix. Our bar will be open for you to have a drink and have a friendly chat with some new faces. Lucky Dip breaks down the formal format of networking to bring people together in an accessible, fun and informal way. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just dipping your toes into Southend’s art scene, join us for evenings that are relaxed and creatively inspiring.We hope you can make it! Doors are at 7pm and tickets are limited, so be sure to book your free place A bit about ElspethElspeth (Billie) Penfold is a textile artist who combines walking, weaving and performative storytelling. Bille uses hapticity and psychogeography to connect threads and words. She hand-spins ropes which are knotted by participants as part of performative events. Billie’s approach to multi-layered storytelling is influenced by her Andean Background.
