Engagement with shared liminal experiences — blurred spaces between musical bodies, presence and control within collaborative networks, and adaptation of bodies and movement to others — in music performance led to the design of RaveNET. This network of wearable biosensing "nodes" probes body-based sources of musical connections, an includes a vocal "anti-corset", biosensing glove for bass, and expression-sensing cap for drum machine.Courtney Reed discusses dual post-humanist and phenomenological perspectives in this talk about being noticed and heard in musical collaboration, sensations of power and connection, and attention to the physical effort of others. In addition to reflecting on her role as a member of the musical network, she outlines her use of micro-phenomenology to probe the pre-reflective experiences of her ensemble-mates, demonstrating how shared sensory experiences in musical settings guide creativity and experiences of self and belonging. <h3>Dr Jenn Kirby</h3>The Body in Digital Musical Instrument DesignIn this talk, I will discuss my approaches to making digital musical instruments, which aim to incorporate intuitive body movement using an iterative design process.The body as a component, alongside sensors, controllers, data, mapping and gesture strategies all become entangled in a hybrid system where the interaction between components produces the overall system behaviour. Rather than considering the attributes of the body as a static component, beginning with the moving body allows for intuition and behaviour to feed into hybrid system implementation. In a similar way to how we might let our ears guide us in our sound making and improvisation, we can let our bodies guide the interaction to understand the performative, expressive and musical meaning of the interaction itself. The aim of this approach is to make performance systems which connect and integrate all components and soften the boundaries between body, technology, sound and movement.This talk will feature demonstrations of instruments and systems that highlight this body-led approach and iterative process. <h3>The CHIME Network</h3>The CHIME network (Computer Human Interaction and Music nEtwork) is an EPSRC-funded research network in Music and Human Computer Interaction which launched in April 2022.<a href="https://chime.ac.uk" title="https://chime.ac.uk" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">chime.ac.uk</a>
