Junior Roller Derby Taster Sessions March 2020

We are South Yorkshire's only junior roller derby team and one of the top teams in the country, holding our own in national competitions and producing skaters who have represented Great Britain at the Junior Roller Derby World Cup held every two years. Our skaters are ages 8-17, any gender, and come from across the region.We offer free trial sessions once or twice per year for all skaters, no matter how experienced. Sheffield Steel Junior Rollers

Looking for a fast paced full contact sport for 8-17 years olds of any gender that develops skills, confidence and team work? Come and try out Roller Derby. We are South Yorkshires only Junior Roller derby team and we are looking to continue growing our successful team. Our skaters come from across Sheffield and beyond.  Who can come along?
We welcome young people of all genders from age 8 to 17. No one is born playing roller derby, so everyone starts off as a beginner. If you've skated before that's great but lots of our current skaters put skates on for the first time at a taster session. We will teach you how to stop, turn around, skate backwards, fall safely, jump, and so much more. We want roller derby to be open to all so talk to us and we can help. 
What do you need?
Everyone attending a session will need to have all of the following:

We are able to lend out kit (supplies are limited as they are all donations, once you have signed up here there will be a form to tell us what you need). 
How does the session work?
The sessions will run from 9:30 - 11:30am at Skate Central. We have an earlier start time and later finish time to allow for kitting up, saftey checks and time at the end for any questions.
There will be an introduction to roller derby and the safety equipment required. We will then do an off skates warm up before putting on skates to try out some of the skills and drills we practice. Our current junior skaters will be there to talk about their experiences and answer any questions.
What happens next?
After the taster session we will be starting our Junior Roller Derby level 1 program. This goes through all the skills necessary to play roller derby and advance (when ready) to the next level in Junior Roller Derby . 
What are the costs?
The taster session is free. After that there is a membership fee of £15 a month for one skater and £25 for a family. We can offer a reduced rate and extended kit hire for families on free school meals or those facing financial hardship. 
FAQs
Is the registration/ticket transferrable?
No - Each parent who wishes for their child/ren to attends must register for themselves.  If you'd like to invite a friend please forward the link. The more the merrier!
Can I update my registration information?
Yes - Please log in to update your details.
Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?
No - Save the trees.  We'll print out a list of attendees for each session.
What about if I don't fit with the age limit?
If your child is under 8 years old and keen to get started skating there are public sessions at our home venue skate central. We'd be happy to send on information about the equipment we recommend and the skills we start with.
