ISPS promotes psychological and social approaches to psychosis.ISPS UKis the United Kingdom network of the International organisationISPS– International Society for Psychological and Social Approaches to Psychosis (formerly known as the International Society for the Psychological Treatment of the Schizophrenias and other Psychoses).ISPS draws together individuals who are interested in the psychological understanding and treatment of the psychoses and supports those who want to develop psychological approaches in their own places of work.ISPS works to promote greater knowledge of the different psychological approaches to psychosis and psychotic experiences – psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioural, arts-based, family and holistic approaches – and their better integration with each other and with pharmaceutical approaches.ISPS provides a place where professionals, service users and carers can share their ideas, hopes and struggles, and can examine their differences in constructive dialogue and debate.ISPS UK:Organises national and regional conferences and workshops on key issuesSupports the development of local groups and special interest groupsPromotes good practice in psychological approaches to psychosisPublishes a regular newsletter with in depth reviews of books and conferencesProvides a lively, widely-used email discussion listLinks with ISPS networks in other countries

Join us for an insightful afternoon exploring why relationships are crucial to social and psychologically informed approaches to ‘psychosis’

We are delighted to invite you to the Annual General Meeting of ISPS UK where we will be joined by three renowned guest speakers who will explore problems with the current paradigm and why relationships are crucial to social and psychologically informed approaches to ‘psychosis’.The afternoon will begin with a series of exciting talks by Professor John Read, Lisa Archibald and Dr Jacqui Dillon, as we delve into why relationships matter for those living with the experience described as ‘psychosis’. We will explore the profound space between two individuals, where connections are forged, meaning is made, and lives are transformed. How do these relationships happen within the context of mainstream services and how can we stay connected with people through crisis?Our three talks will be:<ul><li>“How Diagnoses Keep People Apart” (Prof. John Read)</li><li>“First Do No Harm – Iatrogenic Harm in Mental Health” (Dr Jacqui Dillon)</li><li>“Intentional Peer Support – A relational approach to experiences that might get labelled as ‘psychosis’ ” (Lisa Archibald)</li></ul>There will be an opportunity for some lively discussion with speakers and together we'll explore the possibility of genuine collaboration in our work.The Seminar will be followed at 3.30pm by the ISPS UK Annual General Meeting where you can learn more about our work this past year, contribute to future decisions and discuss your thoughts/feedback with trustees. AGM papers will be circulated to members at least 14 days prior to the meeting.This gathering provides us with the invaluable chance to come together, share, celebrate, and collectively shape the path forward. We look forward to seeing you there.Attendance is free for ISPS UK members and we have a limited number of free places for LSBU students. Seminar tickets are £25 for non-members. Our speakers:Professor John ReadJohn worked for nearly 20 years as a Clinical Psychologist and manager of mental health services in the UK and the USA, before joining the University of Auckland, New Zealand, in 1994, where he worked until 2013. He has served as Director of the Clinical Psychology professional graduate programmes at both Auckland and, more recently, the University of Liverpool and University of East London. He has published over 150 papers in research journals, primarily on the relationship between adverse life events and psychosis. In 2022 he was listed in Stanford University’s register of the top 25 most cited researchers in the world, was inducted as a Life Member of International ISPS.Lisa ArchiboldLisa is Co-Director of Intentional Peer Support. She is a proud Scot and has set up, coordinated and trained peer communities internationally for 20 years. Lisa became an IPS trainer in 2016, first organisationally, then went on to facilitate training and co-reflections for the IPS hub in New Zealand then IPS Central. Lisa was a Winston Churchill fellow in 2013, a Yale Let(s) LEAD fellow in 2019 and is now currently an MSc in Mad Studies student. Lisa is a solo adult raising 2 small global citizens and has a jet setting kiwi born cat called Shadow.Dr Jacqui DillonJacqui is the chair of ISPS UK. She is an activist, author, and speaker, and has lectured and published worldwide on trauma, abuse, hearing voices, psychosis, dissociation, and healing. She is a key figure in the international Hearing Voices Movement, has co-edited three books, published numerous articles and papers and is on the editorial board of the journal Psychosis: Psychological, Social and Integrative Approaches. Jacqui’s survival of childhood abuse and subsequent experiences of using psychiatric services inform her work, and she is an outspoken advocate and campaigner for relational and trauma-informed approaches to madness and distress.
